April to August 2021

April

Welcome back to those who survived my last epic blog, sorry once I am in the mood to write I just keep going. It’s April and the weather is still warm but there is a slight chill in the air in the mornings and the evenings sometimes require a long sleeve, so Winter is coming. April fools day and no one tricked me ! We are out of lockdown and all is well again. Friday 2nd is good Friday and as we have 4 days free of activities in the diary, we all start on Mia’s bedroom revamp. The wardrobe doors come off and the bed is dismantled for painting. Mia is moved into Zoe’s room while Bob gives the walls a rub down ready for a repaint. Lots of discussions on designs and colours and TJ is clearing out cupboards and drawers. A busy day but not much to show for it but we do have a plan!

Saturday it is necessary to visit Ikea for a mirror, a new desk top and a chair so I suggest we go early before the crowds and have breakfast there ? There was no rejection to that idea so off we went. We all had a lovely morning, choosing pieces for Mia’s room and the breakfast was fab.

Mias room

We all worked, building, painting, sorting etc through a wet Easter Sunday and Monday (except I did sneak out for a coffee with the ladies on Sunday morning for a couple of hours as our usual coffee morning had been cancelled in the lockdown.) Before that though, we had to do the Easter Bunny Egg Hunt.

Tuesday and the girls are at vacation care so I have the day to sew the chair seat cushion and bed throw to match the curtains in Mia’s room. Adam and TJ are back to work so the bedroom reno is put on hold.

Wednesday the Nissan Pathfinder has a service booked at Wynnum which is by the sea so Bob and I take it to the garage, with the girls, as its our day with them. After we drop the car off we walk a klm and a bit to the sea and have some play time in the park. We have coffee, babyccino’s for the girls and because the car isn’t ready at 12 noon, we also have time for lunch of fish and chips too. On the way back its an uphill walk, Zoe is complaining she is tired so we have promised the girls a treat for being so good and we take them to our favourite village, Bulimba, to the cinema to watch the new Peter Rabbit 2. The film has been a long time coming as it was supposed to be released last November but it was well worth the wait.

Friday morning the girls have gone off to vacation care very excited as today they are being taken to Australia Zoo for the day. Mid morning, Adam gets a call from Channel 7 news asking about a comment on a forum about electricity problems. They ask if he would agree to talk about and be filmed for a news item going out that evening investigating the problem. Tj and I are out shopping when Adam calls to tell us so we hotfoot it home to be there. Its a very interesting couple of hours, they ask lots of questions and they video Adam talking and showing them the electricity box that is the root of their problems, then we wait patiently from 6pm until nearly 7pm when his item is broadcast. As you can see from the clip, it wasn’t very much for all that time it took to record but it was his 15 seconds of fame lol. * Adam TV

Saturday 10th April and we are going to Southbank in the city for a swim in the late afternoon. The beach is manmade and is free to all so its quite busy but the girls have a wonderful time even though the water is quite cold. After we are all showered and dressed we say bye to Adam and Bob who are going on a Dad’s night out to a putt putt course with some of the Dads of Mia’s class mates. Tj and I decide to stay in the city with the girls and have dinner. We choose an Italian restaurant called Papa Rossi as it has some good reviews. However, after giving our order we wait sometime and have to remind them we would like our drinks, after nearly 30 mins they bring a garlic bread to share as a starter but still no drinks? Finally we get them and the main course arrives soon after. I am so disappointed in my lasagne, it looks like someone slopped it in the dish and then served it? I asked if this was normal presentation and the young waitress just looked at me and shrugged her shoulders. Not wanting to make a fuss in front of the girls I ate it, it tasted ok but for $24 I thought it, and the service was very poor. I did email them later and complain but I got the usual standard reply. I emailed again and got no reply so I posted on Facebook. To cheer ourselves up, we went to Max Brenners for pudding – a chocolate dessert shop where we had chocolate soufflés with ice cream -mmmmmm… and a hot chocolate mmmm…. er I feel sick now lol.

Sunday Tj is up early and in the garage, she has decided to have an impromptu garage sale. I have to make the posters and I attached them to the lampposts on the main road. Tj sets everything up outside the garage and Adam and Bob sort through the rubbish and load up the car for a tip run. Tj sits outside until mid afternoon when we decide to pack away . The garage is much tidier, the “for Sale” pile is greatly reduced and they have made a few $’s, win win. Monday and everyone is working so as there is nothing more for me to do I start making Zoe’s glitter skirt she wanted. She loves these skirts but she is growing so tall that the ones she has are all too short now. She loves it but I hadn’t realised how much it sheds – all over the house ! Adam has banned her wearing it inside now .

Zoe in her beautiful glittery new skirt that Daddy hates because he is covered in glitter too ! haha

Wednesday is my coffee day and Karyn has invited us all to her house for coffee and cake and then to her local RSL leagues club for lunch afterwards. Karyn lives on the north side of the city so its quite a trek for her to keep coming to us on the South side every week, so its nice to see her in her home and where she lives. We should have had the girls today but we change their vacation care day so I could go to Karyn’s. Thursday Bob is golfing in the morning so I get the girls all to myself, we have fun making Anzac biscuits and then we play some board games and do some reading. In the afternoon when Bob is back from golf I visit the doctor to ask about my hip pain and she sends me for an x-ray. Later it’s back to the Dentist for Mia’s second filling, she is very brave. On Friday Tj takes me to the x-ray clinic for my x-ray, its a very good system here, you just turn up give them your paperwork and you are in and done in 15 mins. Afterwards TJ and I, with the girls, go shopping for last minute stuff for Adams 40 + 1 Birthday Party tomorrow. While we are in the shopping centre we see a trampoline with bouncing harnesses, the girls want a go so we let them enjoy.

Saturday April 17th and we spend the day preparing and getting everything together, we have a rest in the afternoon so that we can party all night ! The babysitter arrives at 5pm and takes over the girls, so that we can get ready ourselves and Tj and I go to the venue to set up all the balloons and decorations. People start to arrive at 6.30 pm and its a great atmosphere, everyone chats to each other, even though many of them don’t know each other. Many have made the effort to come in 80’s gear which helps the party spirit.

At the end of the evening, we had a huge pile of party accessories and presents, too much to put in a taxi so Bob and I walked the 10 mins home with all the “stuff” oh and we borrowed a mode of transport from the local supermarket – it started to rain on the way back so we did get a bit wet but we also got a few beeps from passing cars which made us laugh. We did give the trolley back later!

Tj has wanted to enrol the girls in a Taiwando or karate class for a while but we have tried a few places and not found any that were suitable. Today we are trying Focus MMA ( Mixed Martial Arts) . From the very moment we entered, we liked the vibe of the place, run by a family with several older teenagers who all participate as tutors. The girls had “Mia the instructor” run through some basics with them and assessed that although Zoe is young she was doing what she should so instead of the little Ninja class for her age, she could try out the beginners class with Mia. It all seems very flexible so Tj signs them up for a Monday and Thursday session to see how we go.

Time for another haircut, we still use the Hair Academy and the instructors all know us by name now. While we are there, Bob gets a message to say that our Doctors surgery has AZ Vaccine available and we should call if we want it. Wow surprised, as only a couple of weeks ago we asked if we were able to have it and was told yes but no idea when. So we stopped off on the way back from the hairdressers and Bob booked in for tomorrow and me for the following week as I have had a cold and I want it completely gone before I have the jab. Later in the day the Doctor calls me with results of my x-ray on my hips – sadly its not good – Arthritis in both hips but severe in the right !. I will probably need hip replacement surgery but I will need a scan to see the extent of what’s happening, I will have to organise this as soon as I get back to the UK. Oh well just have to keep taking the tablets.

Thursday morning and Bob had his jab yesterday, says he feels ok and has gone off to play golf! (I hasten to add that Tj and I suggested he give golf a miss). It’s the school cross country race this morning, both girls do not excel at this type of activity but they line up with their year and off they run. They both set off with gusto but half way round they begin to lag – however neither are last and Mia beat her placing from last year so all good.

Bob reappears mid morning, only having played 9 holes, looking like death and feels terrible with a headache, hot and cold shivering and achy. Not good timing as we are going away camping with 2 other families at lunchtime. He puts himself to bed with a paracetamol for a couple of hours nap which picks him up enough to go with Adam to set the camp trailer up at the site.

As soon as the girls finish school TJ and I pick them up and drive the 2 hrs north to meet them. Its a lovely site and although the trailer tent seems to have a slight problem with the air filled poles in the awning, everything else is good. The kids are happy to see their friends and go off playing while we organise warming the pre-cooked dinner. We spend the evening exploring the site and then sitting with a few bottles of wine and chatting while the kids run wild wearing themselves out – perfect. Bob is feeling a bit better but he goes off to bed early.

Friday and Saturday the kids are up and out calling for their friends, scrounging breakfast food where ever they can. The site manager gave them all free use of the 2 seater bikes on site as there aren’t too many people there and we all make use of the heated pool and the slides. I find time to read my book, we play crazy golf and all the kids got a free ice cream from the site manager for taking part in a challenge. There are also crafting sessions which not only the little kids but the big kids enjoyed too and then a disco! James, one of the dads has brought a couple of fishing rods so Adam goes along for a bit of fishing on the river alongside the camp site, the weather is perfect and its so peaceful even though the campsite filled up considerably Saturday night.

Early Sunday morning 25th April, 6am,and its chilly, its Anzac Day and our Lucy’s birthday too. We drag the kids out of bed and they put their scout uniforms on, we have our own little ceremony, breaking the flag and then I play the last post on my phone, followed by a minutes silence – then back to bed having paid our respects to the fallen.

After breakfast later Bob and I escaped for a couple of hours as it’s such a beautiful day. We drive up the coast towards Coolum and stopping off at a reservoir. Walking down to the reservoir we disturbed a very large lizardy creature but I couldn’t get my phone out fast enough to take a photo but you can see his tail – just. As its a bank holiday, some places we wanted to stop at were closed so we drove to the beach and walked along the seafront until we found a nice café and sat and watched the world go by. In the early evening we all went to the restaurant on site for dinner, fabulous food and realistic prices and not far to stagger back to the campers so everyone was happy.

Monday was a bank holiday so we asked if we could stay longer than the 10am departure time to make the most of the day and they said yes. So we packed up the camper, had a leisurely lunch in the restaurant and then had a final play in the pool before leaving around 4pm for the 2hr journey home. Must say considering there were 6 kids between 5 and 8 years it was a most relaxing and enjoyable holiday, they all got along and wore themselves out playing together while the adults chatted and enjoyed the peace.

Tuesday morning and the girls are back at school, I have a pile of washing and its raining. I do what is necessary and hang it to dry in the garage. I will have my Covid jab tomorrow so I have cleared my day so that I can rest. I think Bob had such a reaction because he didn’t relax -well that’s my excuse. The jab is fine, didn’t hurt hardly at all, I have my comfy joggers and my book and the TV remote for my day relaxing. I get through Thursday with just a sore arm so my theory worked. Friday I am well enough to join my ladies for lunch at EASTS League Club where I tell them all about my holiday.

May

Well we chose the best weekend to go away because this weekend it’s raining heavy and constant all along the coast. It’s so heavy in places that its flooding. Adam isn’t happy because he has a cold and TJ wants Zoe’s bedroom done this weekend! Bob starts by taking the wardrobe doors down and preparing for panelling and painting, the walls are rubbed down and repainted and her bed is taken to the garage for repainting. I am busy sewing a bed throw and making Zoe a hanging pocket for jewellery and bits and pieces. Adam and Bob do a quick trip to Ikea for a new desk top and a mirror while TJ and I set about make a lamp shade with the same material as the throw and curtains – I have never tried doing this before but it was so easy – loved it. Monday is another bank holiday (May Day) so we got loads done and the girls were good keeping themselves occupied while we worked but we didn’t quite finish. Never mind next weekend we will finish and Zoe is happy bunking up with Mia in her room.

Tuesday and girls are back to school, Adam & TJ go to work (upstairs in the office) again. Now I have time to finish the hanging pockets for Zoe’s jewellery and bits and pieces. Wednesday scouts is cancelled along with Mothers Day celebrations, as the flooding in the field around the hut is too deep – its still raining – never known it rain for so long.

Thursday and while Bob is golfing I get to write some blog. Then I realise my car tax in Spain is due so I spend a couple of hours trying to get hold of a copy of the bill so that I can pay it online (they would have sent me the bill in the post but as I can’t get to it I have to surf the net to get it electronically – it was quite easy to do but time consuming to find the information. Eventually I manage to pay the bill online once I remember that Spain uses a comma between euros and cents and not a dot ! Some good news, I just received an email from the UK Police to say that our Police Check is on its way (we needed it for our visa which is on hold until we get it ). I understand that we have been here for over a year so the Australian Immigration want to check that we are good people but we are only here because we can’t get home !

Friday and I meet the ladies for coffee. One of the ladies, Rai, has to go to hospital to have a stress test on her heart , she has some pains but it turns out to be a muscle problem, thank goodness her heart is fine. In the afternoon I finished the Jan to March Blog and upload it- ah breath ….. and start April to June blog.

The weekend again and its the girl’s friend Lucy’s 5th birthday the party is in a warehouse with adventure climbing stuff. We all arrive and after chatting to other parents for a bit, Tj and I slide out to visit the Op shop next door (charity shop ). After the party the whole family goes in and we have a lot of fun, playing mannequins in the window and trying on stuff – crazy family!

On the way home, Tj got a message to say she had won $100 voucher to use for tourist entertainment. This is a program that Brisbane has to encourage people to go out and spend money at small businesses to help keep them going during the pandemic. The list of places you can use them are pretty extensive so during the afternoon we have a family meeting and decide to spend tomorrow at Whites Ridge Farm. In the meantime Adam & TJ take the opportunity of free babysitters to have an evening out with their friends at Puzzle, an Escape room and then dinner out with friends

Sunday 9th May and it’s Mothers day so Tj and I are happy to have the day out at White Ridge Farm. It’s not a big place and its a bit tired in some parts but there are a lot of improvements being made and the food and facilities are adequate. We really enjoyed the day, petting and feeding all the animals, especially Bobs kisses with a Camel!

The rest of the week was the usual, Martial Arts, Scouts, Drama and swimming for the girls, golf for Bob and he finished the doors on Zoe’s wardrobes, work for Adam and Tj. Washing, ironing, cleaning and some sewing for me and I finished the week with coffee with my Ladies at the Jam Pantry Friday morning. Its so nice to have that couple of hours to chat and laugh about anything and everything with ladies your same age .

The next weekend is Samford Scout Camp for Mia and Zoe. Tj and I aren’t keen on sleeping on the floor in a field in a tent so we elect to stay home at night and drive back and forth the 1hr 30mins each way, each day, to spend with them. Adam is working Friday and the girls are at school so Bob and Tj go to the site to set up camp and Adam and I pick the girls up from school later and collect fish and chips from the local village chip shop on our way there. With everyone fed and as it gets dark Tj and I turn for home. The next morning we are up early and drive up to Samford and spend the day helping with the activities the girls do. They had Zorb balls for adults and children which was so funny to watch. They cooked pancakes on an upside down tin with a candle inside, Zoe loved them and made several ! They did screen printing on t shirts and rafting in a pool with competitions and a water slide into the water. Flag down was Sunday morning about 11am, we arrived in time to help packed up the tent and left for home by 2.30pm.

Bob and I have been offered the use of an apartment on the Gold Coast for a getaway. Sam and Ollie the owners, had been renting it out but as they are having it completely updated it was empty at the moment. The builder doing the reno can’t start for a couple of weeks so we took the opportunity to have some time on our own, to rest and read our books and swim in the lovely pool at the apartment. We set off Tuesday morning, calling at the supermarket on the way down to pick up food for the 4 days. We also stopped off at an outlet village and Bob bought some new shorts and a pair of golf shoes, as the soles had come apart on his pair here. After picking up the key we settled into the apartment, cooked dinner and chilled. Wednesday we went for a walk along the coast and stopped for coffee – we noticed there was an inordinate number of women with pushchairs and small babies, walking, running, chatting in groups and also having coffee. It occurred to us that these babies would have been conceived just over a year ago – at the start of the first Covid lockdown – these were Covid babies !! lol

The swimming pools at the apartment are beautiful as you can see, one is heated the other not. Obviously we only swam in the heated pool but it was very quiet there so we had it to ourselves most of the time. We relaxed, walked short distances, read our books, did some shopping and had lunch out and relaxed in the apartment in the evening with a meal at home. The last night we did venture out in the evening for a meal but walked around and couldn’t find a restaurant we fancied or one that was not full of people so we ended up with a fish and chips supper!

We travelled home in time for dinner Friday and Saturday morning the girls went to their friends for the day while Adam, Tj, Bob and I went to the Pool Show. We are close to finding what we want, just need to talk to some professionals for info about pool cleaners, filters and covers. We spent the whole day there, stopping for a bit of lunch down the road at a restaurant as the show venue only had coffee and donuts on offer. While in the restaurant we noticed a long queue outside going round a building next door, we asked what they were queuing for and was told it was an art exhibition. Can’t remember the artist now but we looked it up on the internet and found it was one of those artists who put a pile of dirt on the floor or such like and call it art !. Back to the show and we gained an enormous amount of information about pools and their workings so a good day. In the evening Bob and I went out for dinner with friends we had met a few years ago here, due to Covid we haven’t seen them this time but with restrictions relaxed we managed to catch up.

The following week, Tj’s friend Clarisa (who she used to work with but hasn’t seen for sometime,) was visiting Brisbane. Tj invited her here for dinner and Bob cooked a lovely stir fry meal and we had a bottle of wine and a good chat. She lives out in the sticks in a remote place with her parents, sister and her son so it was nice for her to catch up too.

To have some semblance of organisation we have a rota for cooking duty, this Wednesday I messed up the system by misreading the rota and cooking dinner on Tj’s day oops.. should have gone to specsavers ! Thursday the girls went to Martial Arts and they both gained a “tip” for their belts – when they have all 7 “tips” they get to grade for the next belt. Friday morning we received our Visa Grant letters so we are now on a proper visa and the bridging visa is cancelled. We have until November before this one expires but we are hoping that we will be able to return to the UK in September. Our Emirates flights go via Dubai which is a red country at the moment so we are looking at maybe booking Singapore flights instead?

The last weekend of May, where does the time go? Tj and I are going out Saturday evening for dinner at a Mexican restaurant called California Natural with some of the mums of Mia’s class mates. The boys are left with the girls to get their own dinner — ah ha – caught them- they went to the local leagues club for dinner with the girls ! Sunday was a DIY day, a visit to the local Bunnings store (B & Q type shop), the girls homework is done and a bbq dinner cooked, then The Apprentice on TV in the evening, and that’s another weekend over.

June

I want to make quilts for the girls from their baby and toddler clothes as a keepsake, I do so miss my lovely sewing and embroidery machines ! Tj has gathered some items that have sentimental value and I have started to cut them up into squares. Its going to be a long job on a $99 Singer sewing machine, I may have to continue it next visit ! Wednesday morning Bob and I had volunteered to do reading group with Zoe’s class, we arrived ready to help but were told that as we don’t have a blue card we can’t do it. (A Blue card is like a Police Check for working with children) we were only going to be there 30 mins supervised by the teacher, but rules is rules. So we went off to have our haircuts at the Hair Academy and were told that we weren’t in the appointment book!! What, not going well today. Fortunately Caron the tutor, said she could fit us in, in about an hour so we went for coffee and returned later.

The girls school photos were this week – I took a photo before they went in as the price is really expensive and the photos aren’t always the best.

Saturday morning and TJ suddenly remembered at 9.55am that the girls had a catch up swim class at 10am – we were all still in our PJ’s and she thought she wouldn’t make it – but a crazy dash around and in 3 mins she was in the car with the girls in swimsuits and going ! They only missed 5 mins so not bad ! I have been asking Adam to take the mosquito blinds off the front windows so I can clean them, finally he took them off and I cleaned them until they shone then we applied a liquid that repels rain and dirt before replacing the blinds. Amazing stuff, so good that I used it on their shower screens too to make them easier to clean. We had “the Brennan family” with their 3 girls over for a BBQ Saturday afternoon and then Adam went out at 6pm for a dads night out too. So Sunday was a chilled day getting the girls to do their homework and watching some tv.

Monday 8th June and Adam isn’t feeling well, Mia has a chesty cough and Tj has kept her at home for the day so Bob and I looked after her. Tuesday with Tj busy with meetings, Adam not well and Bob golfing, I was left to drive Zoe to school on my own and then continued to my friend Rai’s house and on to the cafe where I met the other ladies for coffee. I showed them my casserole carrier I had quilted and Karyn was very impressed, saying that it was just what she needed, guess I will have to make another one now?

Tjs Casserole carrier I made

While I was out, Tj talked to Dean from Performance Pools who came to give her a quote, he had been recommended by other friends and she said she was very impressed with him – lets see what the quote is like ? Mia is still at home Wednesday and Thursday but she is feeling better, so Friday she goes back to school and when she walked into her classroom, all her classmates came and gave her a hug and said they had missed her – how cute was that. Adam had had a recall for the towbar on his Pathfinder car so after dropping the girls off at school , Bob and I took the car to the garage but after 30 mins they came back and said it wasn’t a factory fitted towbar so didn’t need anything doing ?? Surely they would have known that before they recalled it – however, since we are out, we went shopping at a local shopping plaza, had lunch and bob treated himself to a new pair of trousers and a jumper so not a complete waste of a morning.

Saturday morning and everyone was busy, the washing machine isn’t working, a blockage we think, so Adam and Bob pull it out and clean the pipes through. I am on sticker making for the herb garden labels, then with the washing machine fixed they start to move the trampoline and the steps up to the cubby house to make room for where the pool will be. We sprayed the lines of the pool on the grass and talked about sizes and placement of equipment. The quote is in and there are discussions and amendments but I think they are going to book Dean to build their pool?

The placement of the pool and the surrounding tiles in the garden

Tj has an urge for Black Forest Gateaux so she made one, to buy one here is stupid expensive. It tasted amazing ! Then as a treat we all went out for dinner to La Marketa, a sort of “Eat Street” of stalls on a park area with every type of food you can think of.

Sunday morning was the Brissie to the Bay Cycle. Adam was riding 100 kms. The route takes them past the end of our road so the girls spent an hour or so making posters and we stood and cheered the riders on as they passed. Some riders stopped and gave the girls a sweet and others thanked us for cheering them on, it was all for charity.

Monday 14th and Adam had his Covid vaccine, Tj wanted hers too but for some reason she can’t get an appointment yet. I have coffee with the ladies on Tuesday and I drive there myself again and pick up Rai and Tess today, I am getting very brave at driving now, although I still prefer to be chauffeured. Wednesday and the girls school reports come out – Adam and Tj are really pleased that the reports are excellent and Zoe is a little star when it comes to reading – she is near the top of the class. Thursday I go to a sewing exhibition on the Gold Coast with my crafty friend Sam, we stop on the way at her holiday apartment (the one we stayed at last month) as the reno builder has started work and she wants to see how it is going – wow what a difference white paint makes ! However, new bathrooms and a kitchen have to be fitted so it will be a while before its done. The exhibition is disappointing, much smaller than we had anticipated and not many stalls, some were coming from Sydney and Melbourne but Covid put a stop to them travelling up. However, we had a good natter, some lunch and a laugh and we arrange to have a sewing day at Sam’s mums the next day. Its only a week until my birthday –

Saturday Tj and Bob go off to the shooting range for Bobs Christmas present – a clay pigeon shooting session – they had great fun but TJ’s rifle was too big for her and her shoulder was black and blue the next day where it had recoiled. The pool builders quote is agreed so its locked in to start in November, how exciting, now they are looking at pool tiles – do we go white or grey or cream ?? The KP children came for a play and stayed overnight so we had a games night in the evening before bed. They went up to bed at 7.30 and at 8pm they were all asleep ! Their Mum couldn’t believe it because when Mia and Zoe stay over at theirs its 10pm before they all go to sleep?

Sunday morning and Lucy called to say my mums flat had been flooded by a burst pipe in the hallway – it was so bad they can’t stay in the flat so they move to the guest suite down the hallway for 1 night and Lucy manages to get them into a hotel for a few days after that, hoping the insurance company will get it sorted soon. We spend the morning in the park with the girls and then we all go to Zara and Emma Tebble’s birthday party in the afternoon.

Jo Tebble is Mia’s teacher and her twins are in Zoe’s class. I chat to Jo’s mum who is watching from a distance, interestingly her grandparents came from Birmingham, UK and she had been there a couple of years ago to see where her grandparents came from.

Monday morning and Tj gets a call to let her know that Mia is going to get an award at Parade on Tuesday morning at school. Mia doesn’t know so when Mia’s name was called out, she didn’t get up, she didn’t think it was her? bless. She was very proud of her certificate. Rai was doing coffee at her house today so I drove there myself as Bob was golfing and Adam was busy.

Wednesday Adam and Tj went to look at a new warehouse selling all sorts of things, recycled and new. They came back with 2 scooters! Their old scooters had recently been sold as they were too small. These needed some cleaning up but Bob spent a couple of hours taking them apart and cleaning them and the girls were so happy when they saw them.

Thursday is my Birthday Eve and I am all alone ! Bob is golfing, TJ and Adam have gone into work in the city and the girls are at school. I did some tidying, some housework and made myself a fruit cake for my birthday, then I settled down for Corrie catchup and I have started watching the series Queens Gambit. It was so peaceful.

Yeh I am 65years old and I still don’t have a pension ! I have another year to wait. However, the family make a lot of fuss over my birthday, the girls bring gifts and cards to my bed and once they are at school Bob takes the four of us out for breakfast at Ralph and Co, a lovely local cafe. Then Tj and I head for the city for a pamper day at the Sofitel Spa. We have a lovely relaxing time and during high tea on the patio I get another treat – the whole of the New South Wales Origin footballers are in town for the game this evening and are staying in this hotel and they all visit the swimming pool next to where we are sitting – phew what tiny budgie smugglers on muscled bodies !!! I am nearly as hot as I was in the steam room haha. Sorry, I was so busy looking I forgot to take a photo!

In the evening we went to a local school quiz night. It was a charity night and we were part of a table of 10 and although we didn’t win the quiz, we did do very well in the raffle, Tj won a $75 Canvas Picture Voucher and Adam a free haircut. A memorable day, thank you Adam and Tj.

My Boxing day birthday – well that’s what I call it and Bob has an upset tummy. We go for a walk around the block but he still feels yukky so he goes off to bed. Adam and Tj have booked an ice skating session on the banks of the Brisbane river and then lunch in an igloo. We would have gone but due to Covid they are limiting each igloo to 5 people??? We live together what’s the difference but they wouldn’t have it so Bob and I stay home but as he doesn’t feel well it doesn’t matter.

Sunday morning and Adam is off early again on a cycle ride with his Carindale Cycle Club friends. Tj has booked the rest of us in on a plaster fun paint morning. Its all free, so long as we don’t mind them taking photos of us for their promotions- heck click away !. Our morning was very relaxing and our efforts amazing too.

In the afternoon we took the girls to the park on their new scooters.

Its School holidays again so we have the girls at home and spend the morning making a money box – they are saving for some pool toys for when it is built . We painted our nails, read stories, made some beaded book marks and then the girls had some quiet time in their bedrooms after lunch. I spoke to Lucy and she told me that the insurance company hadn’t sorted out my mums ruined carpets yet, so they are going to finish the guest bedroom and Adi is tiling the ensuite so that my mum and Len can stay with them, as hotel living for this length of time isn’t good for them.

Tuesday 29th and the girls go to vacation care in the school grounds, they are doing first aid today, I am prepared to be bandaged when they get home! I have the day to myself, Tj is out and Adam is working but its bad news on the tv, we are going into lockdown at 6pm for 3 days! We have the girls at home for the rest of the week, bob doing exercises and games in the garden between them making more beaded bookmarks, jigsaws, painting, drawing, cards, cooking etc… to keep them occupied and then the lockdown is extended to Saturday and there are 2 covid cases in Carindale where we are! yikkes.

July

Friday 2nd and Tj is at home so she makes play dough with the girls so I can catch up with washing and ironing. Good job because Saturday is wet and cool so we have a pj day watching films and playing with the girls until later when the lockdown is lifted and they go off to their friends for a sleepover. The gang show has come to town and Adam and TJ take the girls on Sunday to see it, Bob and I don’t feel safe going where there are crowds with the virus around so we stay home and we all have a nice BBQ in the garden when they return.

Monday 5th we have the girls again so we treat them to morning coffee and a cake at the café in the local Leagues Club, they feel so grown up going out for coffee. Then we all went swimming at Sleeman’s Pool where the Olympic and Commonwealth Games are held. The big pool is quite cold but their 25 metre pool is sooo warm. We finish the day with playing in the garden and then MMA their martial arts class. The girls (and us) are exhausted by bedtime. Lucy calls to say my Mum and Len have moved into the guest suite in their house.

Sassy girls out for coffee

Tuesday the girls are at vacation club but Wednesday we started the day with a visit to the library, I have challenged the girls to read 10 books for $10 pocket money. We did some shopping and bought the girls t shirts and a jumper as the weather is cool now (well cool for Brisbane, not the Uk ). We booked Jungle (an Adventure play area in a warehouse) for the afternoon where they spent from 1pm til 5pm having a great time and their friends the KP girls came too. We came home with two happy, red faced, sweat girls but they were soon fed and asking to go to bed! I think that all that energy exhausted me because Thursday I didn’t feel too good but I made a lasagne for tea, a shepherds pie for tomorrow and tomato soup for lunches and then an apple crumble for pudding. Then I went to bed and didn’t eat ! Think I must have eaten something that disagreed with me because I slept a lot of Friday and spent most of Saturday on the sofa. Luckily Tj was at home Friday so she took the girls out to the Townhall and a museum all day.

We were babysitting the girls in the evening so Adam and Tj could go to a Dinner in the Dark event with friends, the girls went straight to bed and were good. The dinner in the dark was apparently weird as you couldn’t see what you were eating. The owner of the restaurant apparently had the idea because his sister was blind. Saturday Adam and Tj took the girls out to a birthday party in the park as I slobbed on the sofa, but it was a rubbish party so they came back and the KP girls came over for a sleepover in the evening. They all went to bed when asked and the adults watched the film Black Widow. Sunday we prepared the costumes and did a practice run for the Bastille day parade at the girls school, they have to dress in something “French”. This year Zoe is going as Coco Chanel and Mia as Marie Curie.

By Tuesday I was feeling much better, the girls went off to school in their costumes looking fabulous, then I ventured out for coffee with the ladies. I had made a casserole carrier for Karyn and when I gave it to her she was so surprised and she loved it. The family love my trifle but I restrict them to 1 a month as its not that healthy! However, Adam kept saying “is it Trifle for pudding?” When I said “I have the ingredients but I haven’t put it together yet, you will have to wait,” he said, ” I don’t mind a deconstructed trifle. ” So I thought well thats what he is going to get ! They all laughed when I dished up the secret pudding that evening!

Zoe as Coco Chanel. How much Sass does this girl have?

Thursday is Sports Day at school, so Tj and I go to school and take our camp chairs as its going to be a while in the field. The girls run their heats, Zoe doesn’t come in the first 3 so she isn’t in the final but we were yelling at Mia to run as she was near the back. All of a sudden she clicked up a gear and she came in 3rd to gain a place in the final, she was so proud of herself. She didn’t win the final but for someone who doesn’t excel at running she amazed us all – well done Mia.

Friday morning Tj said she woke in the night with severe pain in her elbow and this morning she can’t move it at all. So we decide to take her to the A&E in the city as a doctor would only send her there for an x-ray. We can’t go in with her so we drop her at the door and Bob and I go to Southbank for a coffee and wait for a call to say she is sorted. The city is almost deserted, everyone is working from home I think but we find a café overlooking the City Beach and wait.

The view from the cafe over the city beach

After about an hour TJ calls to say she is waiting for an x-ray and for us to go home and she will call when she is done as it could be a while. Eventually she called to say the doctor said she needed a scan. The following day she visited her own doctor who arranged for an MRI scan to confirm if it was excess calcium in her elbow that was pressing on the nerve. She prescribed some anti-inflammatory tablets that thankfully settled it down.

The weekend again, where does the time go? Quick tidy up in the morning as Zoe has a friend called Kiana at school and she has been asking for weeks if she can come for a playdate. Adam is doing a BBQ brunch for Kiana and her parents and we haven’t had them here before, hence the tidy up. They are very nice people and Zoe and Kiana play nicely together . The girls want a pamper evening, so TJ bought face masks and Mia and I cut some flowers and leaves from the garden and we had shoulder and foot massages by the girls. The girls painted my toenails and I painted theirs and we were all very relaxed by bedtime.

The next week was full of Doctor stuff, Adam had his 2nd Vaccine on Monday, Tuesday Tj went for her MRI scan, Wednesday I spoke to a Surgeon’s secretary in the UK and organised an appointment for later in September. When I had my 2nd Vaccine later that day I thought the nurse was a bit rough as it hurt a lot. The bruise the next day showed that she was rough! While at the doctors I asked for a copy of my hip x-ray and the report and I sent it to the Surgeon as requested . Bob could have had his vaccine with me Wednesday but he wanted to play golf on Thursday so he scheduled his for 2pm after golf!. Well at least he didn’t play golf after getting his vaccine last time. Then Friday TJ had her first vaccine. phew

Ouchy

Saturday is Christmas in July in Brisbane and we had been invited to Sam & Ollies house, (Sam is my crafting/sewing buddy). The KP family came too so we took the vegetables and the KPs brought dessert. Sam and Ollie cooked an amazing array of meats and we had a very pleasant afternoon playing games and exchanging a present each.

While at Sam’s Tj noticed a heat tray that Sam was using and was so impressed she said she wanted one. It was old and not made anymore but Tj was on the case and tracked down one in a village called Kooralbyn and beat them down to $30! The owner said we could pick it up on Monday anytime. Well, then we looked at the map and realised it was 1hr 30 mins away ! Oh well had nothing much planned for Monday so Bob and I offered to go on a road trip!. Once we turned off the motorway after about 40 mins we were driving into the wilderness, the road got narrower, the views were of nothing but flat land and big hills in the distance, then we spotted the wildlife – a kangaroo hopping long beside the road, some camels chasing each other, a herd of cows came close to the road to look at us and someone had hung a car from a tree?? When we arrived at the house to collect the plate heater the owner had a full size Tardis in the drive ? There are some strange people who live outside of the city! Once we had collected the heater we realised it was lunchtime and we were hungry so we stopped off at the next town which was Beaudesert, a pleasant little enclave where we found a quaint café where armchairs and coffee tables outside the front door on the pavement are the norm – the sun was shining and the armchairs looked inviting so we sat for half an hour and enjoyed.

The rest of the week was a normal week until Friday, Tj went to the Brisbane Girls Grammar School to have a look round with Rosemaree KP as she is interested in her girls going there at 11 years old. It was packed apparently but they did the tour and were home by 8pm.

Tj had won another $100 voucher to use on tourism stuff so we decided to go to Currumbin Wildlife park on Saturday. We got up early and set off, aiming to arrive around 10am. It was a 1hr 30min journey and when we were almost there the news came on the radio to say there were Covid Cases in Brisbane and the whole of the city would go into lockdown at 4pm ! Darn it ! We decided that as we were nearly there we would continue to the Wildlife park and be extra careful but would leave by 2.30pm to be home by 4pm. We had a wonderful day, the girls enjoyed the play area, the animals and the shows and crashed out with Daddy on the sofa when we got home. Now we had 3 days at home and home schooling to look forward to again. However, the lockdown was extended to 7 days so everyone is at home until next Sunday.

August

Well I hadn’t really meant to keep going into August with the Blog but I think this is going to be my last blog for a while as “we are coming home”! fingers crossed that nothing changes, we have been here 22 months and its been amazing spending the time with the family and watching the girls grow so much physically and mentally. It will be heart wrenching to go but we also miss Lucy and the boys and all our other family and friends. Lucy and Adi have been super stars, sorting out some problems at home and they have had my mum and step dad in their guest room for 8 weeks while the insurance prevaricate over the cost of a couple of carpets ! However, the new carpets are being laid on 31st August so they can return home and vacate the room for us !

On Sunday 1st August TJ got a message to say that she was a close contact with a tutor, who had since been tested positive, at the school she visited Friday and must quarantine with the whole household for 2 weeks !! Oh no, what a disaster, Adam and TJ had booked a 5 day trip away on their own for their wedding anniversary on August 8th revisiting the islands where they were married 13 years ago. They are very disappointed especially as their other trip to Vietnam was also cancelled due to covid last year in March for Adams 40th birthday. I feel so sad for them but life goes on. Anyway, Tj took her covid test and it was negative, Bob and I schooled the girls for the 2 weeks so that Adam and TJ could work, we ordered food for delivery online and some friends dropped red cross parcels at the door with wine, beer, chocolate and games for the girls so it wasn’t so bad, we had each other. Tj’s 8 day covid test was also negative so I think we are all ok.

As the Olympics were still on Bob designed a challenge for the girls, an event every day for the first week, running, high jump, long jump, throwing and a golf ball game. The girls enjoyed the distraction from the school work that the the school were sending everyday and the whole family came out in the garden for a game of cricket etc or just to get some fresh air every now and again. The drama club and Martial Arts group had zoom lessons and we tried to yoga or exercises every day with them too. At the end of the week I made medals for them and we awarded them for the winners of each event and they each won 2 events and drew 1 event. The following week was much the same, Mia finally did a cartwheel properly and Zoe learnt to catch (she had been closing her eyes when the ball came towards her!). Adam started teaching Mia to play chess.

The girls asked me to help them make breakfast in bed for Adam and Tj on their anniversary, Mia picked flowers from the garden and they made toast and fruit with biscuits, chocolate and apple juice, we took it up to them, they were very excited. We had a lovely day, we played with the girls in the garden and ordered a Turkish Uber Eat dinner but it’s not quite as good as 5 days on Hamilton Island!

Friday 13th and we are freed, Adam and TJ have told us that they want to send us to Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast in a 5 star hotel for a few days to say thankyou for looking after the girls. Its not necessary as we enjoyed it, even though we are a bit tired so we said we would go only if they came with us on Sunday and had the day with us. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, the room overlooked the man made beach and lagoon which we all tried out after a walk round the marina and some lunch. However, it was very cold so we moved up to the heated pool and spent the rest of the afternoon with the children in there and the spa. After showers all round in our room we went out for dinner to a pizza restaurant, we sat outside next to a big fire and enjoyed our meal before waving the family off to go home.

After the family left Bob played golf the next day at the Links Course on Hope Island as the hotel golf courses are either closed for maintenance or members only. On the Monday evening we walked to the Marine village and had a lovely meal in the Greek Restaurant and asked at reception if we could have a late checkout on Tuesday. On the way home Tuesday afternoon we stopped off to walk along the side of the river and watched the pelicans in the water.

The last week we have spent saying goodbye to so many friends. Sunday 22nd we went to Kangaroo Park with Zoe’s class friends and their parents for a playdate, lots of them came and said they were sad to see us go and to come back soon. In the afternoon Rita ans Ben Shields and family came over for a BBQ, on Tuesday 24th I went with Rai and Tess to the City Hall for a free concert and a coffee. On Wednesday 25th Bob and I went to have our last haircuts and the tutor at the academy asked for my email to keep in touch – aw. On Friday27th I met the ladies at the leagues club and we had coffee then we went in for a lunch and a glass of wine, Rai gave me a gift of a scarf and a card and said she would really miss me, then in the evening Laureen and Mike came over and we had pizzas and said goodbye and then on Saturday 28th we were invited to the “Brennans” for dinner on their terrace which is very high up and overlooks part of the city. There are still a few to say goodbye to, Sam is coming this week on Wednesday and the KPs will be round. Its so nice to have these people who have become our friends say they will miss us, we will miss them too.

We have booked our pre flight covid tests for Wednesday 1st sept and the day 2 and 8 tests in the Uk, we will have to quarantine for 14 days even though we have been fully vaccinated here. Wednesday we also have to check in and fill in the locator form on the government website. Lucy has been counting the days since about March so its strange to be on single figures now. However, for those of you who are interested in Lucy’s house reno here are a few more pictures of the almost finished home they have made for themselves, I for one am very excited to see it.

This is a massive blog, I am sorry but I needed to finish it so I can go and pack, enjoy it if you wish, maybe you will need to read it in bite sizes a month at a time. Thank you for your comments on previous blogs and I hope this is as good.

Until we see you all, hopefully very soon. Much Love Lyn x

January to March 2021

Happy New Year everyone, lets hope its a better year than last. Well after a quiet Christmas and a disastrous camping trip we welcomed New Year in with a big breakfast on the deck with the KP family. Spending the rest of the day chilling with the girls and watching some TV.

Monday January 2nd we asked Mia if she would like to get her ears pierced NOW, TODAY? We had promised that she could have them done for her 7th birthday which is at the end of the month but with the girls joint birthday pool party in a couple of weeks and going back to school the day after her birthday we decided now would be a good time to get them done and it would also give her no time to think about it and back out. We all set off to the shop, booked her appointment and they said it would be best if she had some sugar before it was done. Bob went to the donut stall and bought us all a chocolate donut – well we were all nervous ! Unfortunately only Tj was allowed to go in with her so we waited outside for the scream – but No scream and in a few minutes Mia appeared with a big grin on her face. “Didn’t hurt ” she said and it was all done.

In the evening the Brisbane Heat were playing 20/20 cricket at the Gabba and Adam had managed to get tickets for him, Bob and the girls to go. Great, TJ and I could have an evening with face masks, chocolate and a chick flick ! The Heat won and the girls were delighted.

This week my ladies are meeting for coffee Tuesday at The Clive, it was chosen by Di whose birthday it was this week. Adam dropped me and Mia at Rai’s house and she drove us there. We were a bit disappointed with the venue, we had to sit outside and there were no fans and the temperatures are in the mid 30’s. Also the waitress had a real attitude but Mia thought she was so grown up going out for coffee and chatted to the ladies happily.

My ladies enjoying a coffee and a chat
Our audience on the 18th !

Wednesday Bob and I went to Wolston for a round of golf, we like this course, it has lots of kangaroos on it and usually its fairly quiet, however, this week we got stuck behind some very slow players who wouldn’t let us through which spoilt both of our games so the scores were never talked about again! Today was also Zoes’ last day at daycare, she has been there since she was 6 months old so it was quite sad that she was leaving but TJ and Adam were cheering because there would be no more extortionate daycare fees to pay !

Tomorrow, because Zoe is 5yrs old now and starting school at the end of January, she can go to the school Vacation Club. We were worried that she would be intimidated by all the bigger children there but not at all, she soon made friends and loved it. Mia of course kept an eye on her little sister too.

Mia taking her little sister to Vacation Club for the first time

Friday 8th and OH NO there are a few cases of COVID hit Brisbane so the government has locked down the city for 3 days until Monday night to try and trace all the people who could have been contaminated. It works well and the all clear is given Monday. However, we are annoyed that 3 women had been out of state to Melbourne on a trip and returned to Brisbane and hadn’t self isolated. They had picked up the virus, lied to the police when questioned and been on a spending spree around the south of Brisbane shops, spreading the virus, causing thousands of people to have to go and get tested and isolate – so selfish ! Therefore, we had a quiet week, staying at home not wanting to go out until we were sure there was no more virus around, we even cancelled coffee with the ladies.

Over the weekend while in lockdown, I finished my dress I was making but it suited TJ better so I gave it to her – oh well I can make another one for myself. The boys have been busy moving and re-making the herb garden. Tj decided that if they are going to have a pool in the garden eventually then the herb garden needs to relocate. Must say they made a nice job adding some homemade trellis and some veggie gardens.

Monday the girls are at home, no vacation care today, its grandparents day so we played some games in the garden. Bob designed a golf ball bowling alley but when he fell off his chair reaching for a ball, Zoe laughed so much, then said “grandad can you do that again, it was so funny”?

Girls are back at vacation care today and my friend Rai is having a Thermomix demonstration so I changed my hair appointment so that I could go and see the new machine in action. She was very impressed and bought one, can’t wait to see what she makes in it. ( I have the previous model at home but I haven’t seen it for so long).

Friday 22nd and TJ has bought tickets to see Shrek at the theatre, Adam doesn’t want to go so I happily stand in. It’s a great show and the girls think they are so grown up going to the theatre.

In the evening TJ and I went out for dinner with some of her friends to a Turkish Restaurant and then onto a cocktail bar afterwards. The funniest thing happened at the cocktail bar just as we were starting to leave, a cockroach appeared on the back of my chair and someone saw it and screamed. It was chased around the floor for a few minutes when another one appeared and the owners were horrified! I think they must have flown in as all the windows were open and it was a very balmy night. Luckily we took it in our stride and left soon after. At the weekend, TJ and Adam are busy so Bob and I take the girls shopping and to get their haircuts. Unfortunately I let Bob loose in the toy shop with the girls and this is what happened….

Just a normal day shopping with the “kids”

Monday 25th January is a special ladies 7th birthday and she has requested a trip to Australia Zoo. We all love this zoo so we set off early to make a day of it, fitting in as many animals and side shows as our legs will tolerate and we were one of the last people to leave. I think we all enjoyed Mia’s birthday.

The following day is Australia day and we have an invite from the KP family to join them for a swim in their pool and a bbq. Lots of fun and games and early to bed because it’s Mia’s first day in year 2 and Zoe’s first day at school tomorrow.

Well what a busy week to end the month that was and on Friday Grandad took us all out to Berkdale to get fish and chips (English style) for dinner to celebrate .

February

The first week of February was hectic, with all the girls activities restarting, we had Scouts on Wednesday where Mia was promoted to Patrol Leader and a Karate trial on Thursday, which didn’t go well, swimming and drama on Friday and on the weekend 2 birthday parties. Both girls went to Nico’s birthday at Bounce in the morning with lots of trampolining and then Mia went to a school friends in the afternoon.

Sunday was a very special day, my step dad Len was 90, Happy Birthday and so sorry that we couldn’t be there and that you are still shielding but hopefully we can celebrate later in the year.

The following week started with a dentist check up on Bobs new dentures – all ok and the rest of the week was filled with the usual stuff, I caught up with the ladies for coffee on Wednesday and Zoe started at Joey scouts in the evening.

Zoes first evening at Joeys and they made a boat

I spent Friday starting on my new dress. Tj was so happy with the one I made for her, she decided to get some material and make another for herself so I am tutoring her in the art of sewing. She is doing good but the overlocker machine still scares her a little.

Valentines day was a Sunday this year, Adam decided to go mountain biking off road in the morning with his friend Ben who had just bought a new bike . Adam wasn’t very lucky and fell off twice, just scrapping some skin but on the third time when he went over the handlebars and bashed every limb he decided to quit. He came limping home like a wounded soldier but soon perked up when Grandad took us all out for breakfast at Ralph & Co, a local restaurant.

This week I continued making my dress, baked some cheese and bacon bread rolls, did some card crafting and had a morning out with the ladies. Bob got wet playing golf on Thursday and Tj did some more on her dress on Friday. In the evening we had the KP girls come over for a sleepover and join in with our Friday night games which they love.

Mia has a friend called Nic at school and he is a very nice boy, he invited her to his birthday party, I think she was the only girl he invited but it was at a place called Extreme Urban so we were a bit worried it might be too rough for her? Haha good old Mia, was in there with all the boys and a lazer gun having a whale of a time. On Sunday Zoe had a class meet up at the swimming pool so we all went for a swim and a chat with some of the other parents.

The last week of February saw us start the prep for Adams birthday party in April. He was 40 last year at the end of March and he was not happy that all their plans were cancelled due to the covid lockdown. So we decided to have a 40 + 1 year party this year. The theme was the 80’s so Tj had lots of ideas and I was busy making, sticking and designing “stuff”. Also Zoe didn’t have a good birthday as we travelled to the campsite where we had to leave 2 days later because of the rain and Mia went to Australia Zoo for hers so we had planned to have a pool party at the end of January for both of them but it was cancelled due to another lockdown. Therefore, we are now preparing for it this coming weekend.

Wednesday Zoe wore her new Joey uniform for the first time. Friday I had a sewing day planned with TJ’s friend Sam, I was making myself a new handbag as my old one was falling apart. I started cutting out as soon as the girls had gone to school and Sam joined me mid morning after her gym session. We stopped for lunch and went across the road to the RSL club and had a lovely meal. The bag didn’t get finished as we had the pool party tomorrow and 10 guest for brunch on Sunday but it would wait a few days.

The pool party started at 10.30 but we were there to set up much earlier, the party goers arrived and brought lots of presents, the children all played together splashing and thoroughly enjoying themselves, Adam was on the bbq cooking Snags (sausages in a slice of bread) and there was lots of food for the kids. The cake was amazing and far too much for the 50 plus people who came to celebrate the girls birthdays- I had to freeze a big chunk of it. When everyone had gone, we had a half hour in the pool with the girls quietly on our own – then packed everything up and went home. Needed an early night ready to start again tomorrow.

Tj and Adams friends they met on a wine tasting cruise they did a few years ago were the brunch guests, everyone brought something with them and Adam was back on the BBQ doing a full English breakfast. They are all retired and very good company but they arrived at 10am, the bucksfizz flowed and they didn’t leave until after 3pm. It was great to see them all and catch up on the gossip and news.

March

So much to tell you about this month, it started Monday 1st March with me driving to an RSL Club about 10 mins away as a practice because the ladies were meeting there for lunch on Wednesday and no one was available to take me so I had to drive myself. I think I have said before, I am not confident to drive here and in a big car and an automatic at that ! However, I did it and parked on the top level of the carpark because it was empty and I wouldn’t get stuck between 2 bigger cars and not be able to back out ! Later Adam, TJ, Bob and I went to look at Sheldon School, a private school, as a possible for Mia to go to when she finishes at Seven Hills. Wow Wow Wow it was amazing, immaculate gardens, classrooms fully equipped with the latest technology, every conceivable course you could want to take, available. The staff efficient and all in a uniform too, the children had impeccable manners – we just couldn’t fault it if you wanted your gifted child to be a President! However, it certainly wasn’t suitable for Mia, it was too regimented and it just wasn’t fun, it was also 1 hour on the bus each way every day.

Tuesday I finished making my bag and on Wednesday I drove to the EASTs club in my newly made dress, with my new handbag, and had a lovely lunch with the ladies and drove home – all without incident, unlike the car and minibus crash on the main road this morning – such a bang but everyone seemed ok. Thursday I played golf with Bob at Wolston with the Kangaroos and in the afternoon after picking the girls up from school we went to Ormiston School for a tour.

Not such a big school as Sheldon, not as immaculately manicured grounds, or as many options of courses but a lot less “stiff” with the uniform and the staff. We liked the school, still a bit of a drive but more like the school that Mia would enjoy we think. It was good to see 2 schools back to back more or less to compare.

Friday night was mums night out, the school class mums went to a bar/ night club – Tj and I went and had a nice chat and some nibbles but when it hit 10pm and they decided to go on to other places we left and made our way home. Its not my cup of tea anymore, flashing lights, loud music and late nights.

Saturday we visited the last of the 3 schools TJ has her eye on for Mia and today was their open day. CHAC is an Anglican Church school, just a few minutes drive from home and nowhere near as big or grand as the other 2 school but it has warmth and what impressed us was their headteacher said that their aim was to encourage every student to find their niche in the world. Not every child is gifted or clever but we all have something to give and that they worked very closely with the community and encouraged participation in the school. Mia and Zoe were on a scout weekend camp so it was just the adults at this school visit which was a shame because it has been decided that this is their number 1 choice. The girls had a great weekend, TJ stayed with the group Saturday overnight while Adam went on a Dads night out and then he took over Sunday morning, taking the Joeys to the park to do a clean up there. In the afternoon when camp was finished we were invited to Mel and James’ house to see and try out their new pool and discuss any pros and cons with them. Tj is still gathering information from wherever she can to help them decide on the many options available.

The second week of march was full of preparations, it is TJ’s 40th on the 18th March and she was planning to go away to Bargara and visit the Mon Repos Conservation Park where the turtles lay their eggs under the beach and then hatch at this time of year. We had said originally that we wouldn’t go as we were expecting to be back in the UK by March 13th. However, with the pandemic no better across Europe and virtually no cases in Queensland we felt that we were safer here and applied for a further 6 month visa to stay until September. Not as easy as normal ! Firstly the cost of the visa went up from 140$ we paid on the original visa in the UK to 1065$ each because it was our second renewal and we are in Australia while applying. Now they have requested Police checks to make sure we are not criminals and what a palaver that its! Anyway, because we are staying here we decided to book a room in the same hotel as Adam and TJ and we asked to go on the wait list for the Mon Repos Park to see the turtles but kept it a secret from TJ so we could surprise her on her birthday morning. Haha she found out because when tickets became available for Mon Repos they text me at the same time as TJ – I hadn’t realised that she also had put us on the wait list in case we didn’t fly back to the UK .

The girls have started skipping classes, bless them they try, Mia is getting better but Zoe just can’t get the hang of it. I must add this picture because Zoe is learning the alphabet and this week one of the sounds she is learning is the SH sound. For each letter or sound they bring home a picture of their drawing. This week the drawing is hilarious…

So on Wednesday 17th March Adam, TJ and the girls set off for their trip to Bargara. Its about 4.5 hours drive so they arrive mid afternoon and Adam took the girls to the beach to stretch their legs while TJ unpacked. A few minutes later Zoe comes screaming “Daddy I found a baby turtle come and see”. Sure enough a baby turtle was making its way to the sea but the seagulls were trying to catch it so Adam and the girls spent an hour protecting it while it waddled its way down the beach, they called her Turtleina. Amazing.

Turtleina making her way to the sea

Thursday morning Bob and I were up early at 4.30am to pack the car and drive the 4.5 hrs so we could spend TJ’s birthday with her. The weather was glorious and the hotel was right on the beach with a lagoon where the tide had gone out, so very safe for the girls to swim in. Adam and I went snorkelling and saw some beautiful fishes swimming around the lagoon, parrot fish, angel fish and some small black and white ones that swam in a cluster amongst others. Someone brought some bread to feed them and thousands of fishes appeared to fight over the crumbs.

In the evening we set off for Mon Repos Turtle centre at about 6.30pm and went out with the first group to look for hatching turtles. Unfortunately none were hatching so the Ranger dug up a nest that had been hatched a couple of days before to count the eggs laid against those hatched . Amazingly there were 2 turtles that were still alive so we watched as they made their way to the sea. Then it began to rain so we returned to the centre. A while later when the rain stopped group 2 went out onto the beach, which was pitch black, no lights are allowed in case they disturb the turtles. They also didn’t see any hatchings but TJ wanted to stay longer so we waited. At around 11pm the last group went out and TJ asked if they could go again? Of course they could but I didn’t want to walk the distance down the beach on the uneven sand in the dark as my hip was hurting so we waited at the centre. Around 11.45 the centre got a call to say that one of the Rangers patrolling the beach had spotted movement from a nest so the Ranger at the centre told us to put our coats on and come quickly. We almost ran up the beach, stumbling and tripping in the pitch dark but we arrived at the nest site just as it erupted with baby turtles climbing over each other to get out of the hole. The sight was amazing to see, (unfortunatley we weren’t allowed to video ) and although I was tired and not too happy about having to hang around so long, Tj was right and it was all worth it. TJ and Zoe were chosen with a few others to stand astride in the pathway the turtles were taking to the sea with their torches on to show them the way. It was well after midnight when we finally left, Zoe had fallen asleep on the beach sitting up, she was so tired bless her but we were all excited about what we had seen and I think Tj was very happy too.

The next morning (Friday) Bob and I had booked a round of golf across the road. We tee’d off at 8am which was difficult to get out of bed for after such a long day and last nights excitement but the morning was fresh and sunny and the course virtually empty so we had a great round and finished in plenty of time to have another dip in the lagoon and a play on the beach with the girls before lunch with the family. Bob went out for a snorkel and saw a stingray in the deeper end of the lagoon – spectacular! We had a swim in the hotel pool and we sat in the hot jacuzzi for a while as there was no one else about.

In the afternoon while the girls had a nap, Adam and Bob went to visit the Bundaberg Rum factory. They had a tour of the factory and a tasting and came back very happy. Adam had booked a meal out at an Italian restaurant in the evening as TJ missed out on her birthday dinner. The restaurant was very quiet but the food was good. Tj wanted ice cream for dessert so we went searching for an ice cream parlour and found a wonderful one not far away where we all had a large cone. Early start tomorrow as I had booked a visit to the Bundaberg Ginger beer factory for 9.30am for Bob and I and then we were going to split the journey home with lunch in Maryborough and a visit to the home of PJ Travers, the author of Mary Poppins.

Bob and I checked out of the hotel and loaded the car and set off for the Ginger Beer Factory. We arranged to meet up in Maryborough later. The factory was very disappointing, it was just a walk through Museum and then a tasting session of all their 15 fizzy flavours – burp! and then 6 free bottles each, we were done and dusted in half an hour! We set off for Maryborough and as we arrived early we stopped at a shopping mall and had a mooch round and a coffee. When Adam and Tj arrived we grabbed some lunch and drove to The Story Bank Museum. The staff here were wonderful with the children, they encouraged them to touch everything, open drawers and look in cupboards. There was a map and you had to find hidden mice in each room and mark them on the map. The story of PJ Travers was very interesting with lots of pictures and articles to look at and read. We were in there for over 2 hours, when we realised they wanted to close at 2 pm and that we were the last people inside. Outside on the street (Cherry Tree Lane) there was a set of traffic lights and when the pedestrian lights flashed it was a silhouette of a lady with an umbrella ! We finished off with a walk to the bottom of the lane and into the park. Sunday the girls wanted to make posters of their holiday for show and tell at school on Monday.

Bundeberg Ginger Beer Tour

Monday and the girls are back at school with their posters and we have Zoe’s parent teacher report at 4pm. Needless to say she has settled into school life easily, she is making lots of friends and Mrs Rogers is very happy with her, although she did note that Zoe is much more full on than Mia ever was.

Tuesday night Mia is concerned about something in her mouth, its a bit of tooth, it has broken off one of her baby teeth. TJ calls the dentist and they can fit her in Wednesday at 11am. Bob and I collect her from school and take her as TJ and Adam are working and the dentist tells us she needs a filling as its a back tooth and probably won’t fall out until she is 9. Bless her she was as good as gold and didn’t flinch when the dentist injected her gum. The dentist said she also has another filling needed on the other side so we have to book another appointment for that later. Half an hour later we are on the way home with Mia because her mouth is numb and her lunch box doesn’t contain anything suitably soft for her to eat. After an hour or so she was feeling better so we pop her back to school and then at 4pm we returned to see Mia’s teachers for her report. Once again, they are very happy with her work and behaviour , in fact they said she was a delight to teach. That evening Zoe was invested into Joey Scouts by her Dad, having her badges and Necker presented to her- so proud of them all.

Thursday 25th TJ is working in the city at a Science Festival for her employers, BHP who are sponsoring some of it. It’s a beautiful day so Bob and I get on the river ferry to meet her for lunch. We were fortunate to get the new double decker ferry so we sat on top and enjoyed the views for the 30 mins journey into the city. The science fair is outside the library alongside the river and it’s full of students from many different schools who are spending the day there. We wander around some of the exhibitions until TJ is ready and then we go for lunch.

trip on the double decker ferry into the city

Its Friday and its 26th March and Adams 41st birthday. We try to spoil him as he has decided that its going to be his ” 40th again” but he does have to work today. After opening his presents and cards and the girls have gone off to school its back to normal. I am still making stuff for his party but its not for a couple of weeks yet. In the evening we all go to Big Roddy’s Rib Shack in the city, it isn’t quite what we were expecting and we were told we only had an hour at the table but the service was very quick and the ribs were amazing so he was happy. We went for a walk afterwards into Southbank and along the river, through a night craft market to the ice cream parlour. The Southbank had lots of science and interactive stuff going on in the evening too, so we wandered through them and tried out a few before walking back to the car.

Over the weekend there are rumblings about another case of the virus in the community. Saturday the girls have a catch up swim class so we all went and had a couple of hours at the pool. In the evening we were supposed to go to a 40th joint birthday party but due to a family illness it was cancelled. We still had a babysitter booked so we went to Puzzle Escape, a new to us escape room venue where we had to work out who the murder was – it turned out to be Adam !

Sunday Mia and Zoe go to a Martial Arts birthday party at FOCUS. Panos is in the same class as Mia but his sister is the same age as Zoe so she is invited to keep Lydia company. Once again we wonder if this is all too rough for the girls but no they both have a wonderful time and the highlight is the cake being cut with an enormous samurai sword!

Monday morning the virus has spread and the morning news informs us that the whole city of Brisbane will be locked down from 5pm today for 3 days again. Schools, shops (except essential) everything closed. The school Easter egg hunt is cancelled, the fundraising Colour Run on Thursday is cancelled and the school will not be open now until after the Easter hols on 19th April. Bob is not impressed that his golf is cancelled this week Tuesday and Thursday. My friend Rai has been trying to travel to Perth to see her family for months and finally she got there 2 weeks ago and is travelling back to Brisbane today and lockdown ! More home schooling for us for 3 days to keep the girls occupied. In Bobs PE lesson with the girls, he was trying to show the girls how easy it is to skip – haha if the video plays, its hilarious. Also he did a bit of hoola hooping too – needs more practice.

His style is so funny

The last pics are of everyone here who can balance a spoon on their nose? No idea why we did it but Zoe and TJ can’t do it apparently, and maybe Bob was cheating ?

I can’t go without a couple of pics of Lucy and Adi’s house, it has taken so long but at the end of March it was coming together so here are a couple of pics showing the progress. We are so proud of their achievements, it has been hard I know and such a struggle but there is light at the end of the tunnel and the next ones will be amazing.

So I will sign off now, I have already started April and May blog which I will try and complete and send in July. Have a good summer and hopefully we will be back in the UK in September.

October to December 2020

October

Well where do I start ? Today is Monday 29th March 2021 and I can’t believe we are still here in Australia. This morning the girls have gone off to school, Adam and TJ have retired to their office to start work and Bob is at the golf range and I am organising a coffee and lunch with friends when facebook and the news are alive with “Brisbane going into Lockdown for 3 days”.  Here we go again …  Schools will close, bars, cafes and restaurants closed. Need to cancel everything and I have to think of things to keep the girls occupied for 3 days – fun fun fun…

Now back to the blog, so I have been far too busy or maybe lazy and I haven’t continued to write the blog but I have been making notes !

Lets go back to October and it really doesn’t seem like we have been here almost a year ! However, the summer is on its way and the average temperature is definitely climbing, we have the fan on slow all night and no cardigans needed at all.

1st October saw Lucy start her new job, thank goodness she managed to find another so quickly at the University, she must be well thought of for them to have her back again ? lol Mia has gone to vacation club at the school as they have a silent disco today so she is happy. My head hurts, I have a bit of a cough and feeling tired think I might have caught a chill at the swimming pool yesterday but I plod on and make the girls heat transfer vinyl designs on some cheap t shirts TJ picked up. Must say I am delighted with the results – what else can I print on ??

Think they like them ?

After a usual busy Friday with the girls and a playdate in the park, Pizza for dinner with a group of Mums and their children, the girls are exhausted and go off to bed. Tj and I wanted to see a film called High Note about a superstar singer but the boys weren’t keen so we decided to go on our own. The cinema in Bulimba is a little one and the carpark is next door but the sign said it was full – really ?

Anyway we enjoyed the film and the parking was easy lol.

Saturday the girls have a dental check up appointment, however, we had the girls friends over for a play and all of a sudden TJ remembered the appointment so flew out the door leaving their friends with us, luckily their mum turned up soon after to pick them up. Dentist was very pleased with them both but Mia has a very small mouth and her teeth are very tight in her mouth so she needs an x-ray for him to see what is going on. Unfortunately her mouth is too small for their smallest x-ray thing so she has to make an appointment to go to a proper clinic to get a round the head x-ray. Adam and TJ missed Bobs birthday and our anniversary as they were away up in Noosa camping in a hired camper last weekend so they promised us a Turkish meal at a great restaurant Saturday night to celebrate. During the week they realised that they still had the keys for the camper in their car so we had to drop them off on the way to the restaurant. Unfortunately the Sultan Restaurant is closing down as the owner is retiring and no one in the family wants to carry on – shame because it was a lovely meal.

Sunday and the weather is warm and the girls want to go swimming again — Back to the Plantation swim pool, it’s still cold but I don’t go in further than my thighs this time as my chest is a bit tight. I think we should have our own pool Adam and TJ with solar heating ??? While the girls have a nap after all that swimming Adam and Bob complete the trellis that they have been building to hold the vegetables up in the garden and we have a family discussion about where we would put a camper trailer which entails Bob doing a lot of digging maybe ?

Ready for the vegetables

Early in the week I am coughing bad now and think I should visit the doctor but he won’t see me in person so I make a phone call appointment and he says I have to have a covid test ! So Wednesday afternoon Bob takes me to the clinic and I get my brain tickled and my throat poked which makes my eyes water and then I have to send in a sputum sample the next day. The negative result comes in 24 hrs later and the sputum shows I have a bad chest infection. I have to take a course of antibiotics and rest but I find that difficult so I potter around in the mornings but put my feet up and start a new book in the afternoons. By Saturday I am feeling a bit better so I go with Bob to get his eyes tested. He has varifocal glasses transition lenses that go dark in the sun but like last time the transition coating is failing and little holes are appearing in the coating. We didn’t intend to buy new ones but on chatting to the optician they said he could have a new set of glasses with transition coating for $299 which would get him through the summer months here so we ordered them. In the afternoon I was making some scrunchies for the girls hair and Mia got interested in how I made them so asked if I would show her. She was so excited to have a go on the sewing machine and helped make her own scrunchie.

Sunday morning the girls came into our bed for cuddles and a chat and while we were having showers they thought it would be funny to imitate us.

Cheeky Monkeys pretending to be Nannie and Grandad !

Mia’s Joey Scout group are going on a bear hunt in the city. Adam has offered to be a helper parent and Tj was going too but she has started to feel unwell – oops I think she has my virus causing chest infection. They spent the whole day hunting down the bear but had a great day.

Mia in the City with her Joey Scout friends looking for a Bear !

In the meantime Bob and I took Zoe to her friend Willa’s birthday party at a girls spa centre where she had her nails done, face painted and hair glittered!

By Monday morning TJ just wasn’t well enough to work so she booked a drs appointment expecting to be told to go and get a Covid test – haha how does she do it, the dr said that as I had had a negative one so recently then she didn’t need to, she probably had the virus and chest infection I had. He signed her off work for a couple of days but Thursday she still wasn’t well enough for work so he signed her off til next Monday. To cheer her up I made trifles – the girls had asked if they could have individual trifles and I have been saving yoghurt pots to make them in and as it happens I now have 6. The girls helped cut up the sponge and put the fruit in and Mia stirred the jelly. They were concerned that we wouldn’t know whose was whose so I had to write names on them and this is what we had for dessert on Monday night ….

Wednesday Adam took Mia to Joey Scouts as usual but stopped to talk to the leaders as he has decided that as Zoe will start Joeys in the new Year that it is time to get back into Scouting and has offered his services. They are delighted as they know he has a wealth of experience having helped out on various occasions. He has to go through the training but then he can be an assistant leader with the Joeys and then maybe move up to Cubs later and then Scouts in years to come. If he has as much fun as Bob and I had with our children in Scouting then he won’t go far wrong.

Friday morning Bob and I went out to do some shopping while the termite man was checking the house and spraying, he had suggested it would be better to be out of the house. When we returned he was still here so Bob and I decided to go across to the Leagues club for a coffee and a bit of lunch. We called Adam and TJ to say we were having lunch there and if they wanted to join us when the termite man had gone? Very soon they joined us and we had a lovely lunch and chat – I think they felt like they were playing hookie from work ? lol. The Friday night games were a bit different this week, Adam has bought a second hand playstation and set up the SingStar Karaoke game in the Rumpus room. Although I really don’t like karaoke we had a lovely evening and Zoe sang her little heart out to Mama Mia and Frozen, we will do this again.

The weekend was going to be chilled and quiet but we ended up having Mias friend Malar stay from Saturday lunch until Sunday lunch. Adam was working in the garden with Bob and I was writing my blog so Tj took the girls on the ferry to a new park and then we joined them in Bulimba for an Indian dinner and NOM NOM Ice-cream for afters, we were all amazed that Malar hadn’t ever had this ice cream – its amazing and you get 2 flavours in a cone for $3.50 – what’s not to like ?

The girls were all worn out by the time they got to bed with such a busy day and their sleepover lasted about 10 mins before they all crashed ! Sunday morning Tj brought out some Aquabeads for the girls to play with – you make shapes and designs with coloured beads and then pour water over them to make them sticky and they stick together. An hour later you can play with them – Malar loved this so much that when her dad came to pick her up she asked him if she could save her money to buy some. bless.

Mia had a Mango tree bought for her when she was born and it has moved 3 times with her and finally this year it has gone mad with flowers and fruit – hoping for a bumper harvest . Zoe had a lemon tree but unfortunately it didn’t survive so Mummy and Daddy bought a new dwarf Lemon tree a few months ago and grandad has found lemons on it already !We know that you should take them off for the first couple of years to allow the tree to establish itself but we thought we would keep just a couple of lemons ? On Sunday afternoon when Malar had gone we all visited the Garden Centre and bought some new herbs to replace the ones that had gone to seed and some vegetables for the newly finished veggie patch – Capsicum, Tomatoes (transferred from old veggie patch) Chillies, Spring Onions and Beetroot.

Zoe had my phone and wanted to take a photo … and talking to Auntie Lucy who is excited that the builders are coming tomorrow to start work on her house !!!

Lucys house, Scaffolding up and ready to start bricklaying

Wednesday 21st October was a very busy day, it started when I realised that the Spanish car tax was overdue and it had not been taken out of my Spanish account although I had set up a direct debit!  It took me the best part of the day, emailing, facebooking and asking friends for help before I finally found a webpage that I could pay the bill with a small fine for being late! Trying to sort stuff in Spain in spanish when you are 16,000 kms away is very stressful ! In between my messaging I wandered into the garden and accidentally stepped on a piece of wood with a nail sticking out of it, luckily I had fairly thick slippers on so it only just pierced my skin – but I made Bob pay for leaving it there !!!

This week TJ had taken Zoe to her new school for a couple of hours to see her teacher and where she would be going in January when she starts school, she was so confident that while TJ was chatting with other parents, Zoe wandered off, when TJ asked where she was going, she said, “to find Mia, don’t worry I know where I am going”. TJ quickly explained that she couldn’t go wandering off but then Zoe spotted Mia at the toilets and ran screaming “Mia” towards her, they hugged and then she was happy. Its so nice to see them getting on so well.

I also started to make a foot stool for the lounge as TJ can’t find what she wants to buy so Bob and I offered to build one! Adam did have to buy me an air staplegun as he has a new compressor in the garage and it made it so easy to attach the material. We found some pallets and knocked up a shape and size and then covered it with some foam we had in the garage and I bought some material to match the hall seat to cover it. It took us a few days but it was a great project and everyone uses it.

Adam and TJ were thinking of buying a folding camper (half caravan and half tent) or have a pool put into the garden.  TJ with her research head on found the perfect camper,  however, the cost when analysed by Adam was very high and they decided that it would be cheaper to hire it 2 or 3 times a year rather than buy and taking into account the devaluation and maintenance costs – so the pool it is then.  Back to the research, so over the next few days we visited several pool company showrooms and talked to everyone we could find… the search goes on…

I must say I’m not a fan of Halloween but the girls had lots of fun with their friends who came over ,they all went out to tap up the neighbours for sweets, returning with a basket full each.

November

The month started with Mia going to the doctors for what he said was a possible spider bite, she had a red mark on her leg that appeared after school and it seemed to be bothering her, she got a couple of days at home but the cream he prescribed soon cleared it up thank goodness.  Wednesday Mia also had a promotion at Joey Scouts to Assistant Patrol Leader, we all, as a family , went to the Scout hut to witness her getting her new badge (another for nannie to sew on).

One evening we went to the cinema, which we haven’t done for a while – saw a film about sheep farmers – afraid it wasn’t the best – can’t even remember the name of it but then we had dinner at London Spice, one of our favourite  Indian restaurants.  Another evening Adam and TJ went to an Axe throwing evening with their friends, they offered to get a babysitter in so we could go too but we declined and let them have an evening out – apparently it was hilarious – the photo I think shows we were wise to stay away, but no one got hurt – amazingly !

The weather is getting hot and we are using the deck and BBQ more but the fan in the ceiling is just a normal size, which isn’t big enough for the area so Tj found a warehouse having a sale so off they went and came back with an enormous 8ft fan – it was soon appreciated when we hosted a lunch with one family and a dinner with another over the weekend.  I met the mum of one of TJs friends  and we arranged to have a coffee together in the week, Rai and I had so much to chat about as we seem to have lots in common – this is the start of a beautiful friendship I hope.

Big Ass Fan

More research on the pool, deciding whether to go for a fibreglass pool or a concrete one, do we have salt or mineral pump and water, what is the best size for the garden and orientation etc.  ? Every pool man that comes to the house to talk to us gives us different answers – confusing ! However one pool man was very interesting and he took a photo of the garden and superimposed the pool so we could see what it would look like – fabulous technology.=

I haven’t felt too well for a while and I have a cough, covid tested so it’s not that, dr sent me for tests and they came back with a question mark – need to see a specialist so I have booked an appointment.  In the meantime we had a busy week, breakfast out at Bulimba, our favourite village, where the electricity went off so no lights and the smoothie maker broke too so we couldn’t have coffee good job the oven was gas and the breakfast was lovely. Bob and I had a round of golf and Friday night TJ and I tried a Thai restaurant called Chu the Phat with her Mummy Group friends – very nice food but strange name ?

The girls out at Chu the Phat

The lung specialist said nothing to worry about, I have had a virus, (not Covid) and I just have inflammation and infection still in my lungs, take it easy he said – I try  ??? In the evening we went out to the Sushi Train restaurant with the KPs (their name is Kanapathapillai so we call them the KPs).

Its getting towards the end of November so we are inundated with drama shows, dance concerts, birthday parties and end of year class get togethers.  Because of Covid, a craft show I was looking forward to was cancelled and Santa didn’t turn up at the girls Christmas photo shoot so we took our own photos.

Because the news is all about Covid, to cheer us up TJ suggested we put the christmas decs up early so Bob and Adam spend half the weekend putting up the outside lights and TJ and I put the tree and inside decs up.

A couple of deers and a kangaroo of course !

DECEMBER

On the first of December Lily Elf arrived, the girls were so excited and have talked about it for weeks.  School finishes next week for the summer break so I manage to get a morning coffee session in at Rai’s house, her friends Karyn, Di and Carol are also there.  I do feel so much better when I have had a good natter and a laugh with them. Bob and I managed a round of golf on Thursday and then took the girls to their extra make up swim class straight after school. Friday Mia has drama after school and Zoe went along this week as a guest and then  their normal swimming class too so they are very tired after dinner but not too tired for Friday games night.

The weekend was filled with fruit and veg market shopping, Malar”s (KP) birthday party was at a beauty salon for the girls where they got a facial and makeover. In the afternoon 3 of their friends came for a few hours while their parents moved out of their house, ready for a reno. Then to finish off the weekend, a BBQ and a swim at friends on Sunday which was nice to just relax and let someone else look after us.

Mia was finishing year 1 school on Wednesday 9th, Bob was out getting a haircut while I had coffee with the girls at a café near the city and as we waited for our coffee a man came in and asked if we were the “chirpy girls” I thought he was referring to our laughter so said yes we were and he pulled up a chair and sat down. Haha we laughed and asked him if he was looking for someone and he said yes the Chirpy Club !! Apparently there was another part to the café outside and he went off to see if they were there.  He didn’t come back so we assumed he found them but when I went to the toilet later the group he was sitting with were nothing like “chirpy” at all!                                                         In the evening Adam was invested into Australia Scouts, now that Mia and soon Zoe are in Scouts he thought it would be the right time to get involved again.  Thursday was Zoe’s Graduation from Kindy, unfortunately because of Covid only 1 parent was allowed to attend to see it so TJ went and took a few photos

the girls out for coffee

The summer rains are here, it hasn’t stopped raining this week, the scouts party is cancelled so we have the girls in the house.  Would you believe that if you give 2 little girls a bag of old makeup they can occupy themselves for 2 hrs – however they did use virtually a whole packet of wet wipes.     Bobs golf is cancelled too, the course is flooded – Mr Grumpy . We make jam and cookies with the girls and when there is a break in the rain we took them to the park for a run around.  The washing is piling up but there is no point in washing as it would be hanging around the house – better to go out and play.

christmas coffee at Ana’s

Ana from my girls group has invited us all to her house for a Christmas coffee morning, so lots of homemade cakes as Ana is a very good cook.   Mia and Zoe are at vacation club most days, Zoe can go too now as she starts school in January  but we do get some days with them. Zoe wanted to go out for coffee so we took her to the local coffee  shop and bought her a babychino and a cake, she thought it was great.  Now she wants to come out with my friends on a coffee morning ?

Zoe all grown up having coffee out

Mia’s friend Aralya wanted to have a sleepover so as it is a few days before christmas we decide to do a drive round to see the many beautifully decorated houses in the area. Then we took her to Berkdale Fish and Chip shop where you can get the best Fish and Chips in Brisbane. Amazingly she tells us she has never had fish and chips before ??

Christmas is approaching and we are thinking about Lucy and the family turning up on the doorstep last Christmas – she assures me it won’t be happening again this Christmas – sad we miss them all so much. However, their house Reno is coming along well and they are so excited that their dream is finally happening, albeit 4.5 years late! This is about 8 weeks into the reno, the old roof and and new one in progress, upstairs layout being decided.

Adam and TJ have decided to try out the camper they liked – it has no poles as the whole tent bit is blown up with air.  We popped down to the Gold Coast to see the guy who is hiring us the camper and he sets it up and takes it down to show us how easy it is and we agree to pick it up the day before we go to give us time to pack it. .  Then we went off for lunch and the girls have some time playing in the park. They have chosen a campsite north of here called the Borumba Deer Park and we will go on Zoes 5th birthday on Tuesday 29th December for a few days and celebrate the new year away with the KP family. We have decided that we want family camping Tshirts so I set to to design and make one each for the camp trip.

Christmas day we spent at home, we chatted to all the family and played with the girls and had a BBQ lunch.

T shirts on, camper packed and ready to go

On the morning of Zoe’s birthday she opened her presents and then we set off for the campsite.  The weather forecast was a bit iffy but hey we can do it.  Booked into the campsite we start to set up the camper, we have precooked dinner so we can just warm it to save time.  The warden comes round to say that there is s storm coming, to batten down the tent as the winds across the field can be very strong !!! Well it rained and rained and rained all night and Wednesday morning it was still raining.  Not good but when there was a lull Tj took the girls to the park to play and omg they had so much fun in the puddles and mud – most of their clothes had to be binned but so what !

The tent was fine but as you stepped out of the camper the ground was sodden and the gazebo we had outside was leaking badly so Adam and Bob went off to the town to try and find a new one. This helped but the water still ran into the groundsheet and the chairs were getting wetter and everything was damp. We managed to have a firepit in the evening and roasted marshmallows over the fire but then the rain came again so we headed for bed.

The next morning was New Years eve and we heard that more rain was forecast, after breakfast we had a family meeting and decided that as the tent was more or less dry now, if we were considering leaving and going home, now was the time to make the decision. Hands up it was decided – pack up!  While the men did this we went to the Office and told them we were leaving and there behind the counter, was a baby deer, only a couple of weeks old.  It didn’t seem bothered by people so the girls stroked it and had photos taken with it. As we drove home, the black clouds followed us and we heard that the storm was very fierce so we were glad we had left.  The KPs came back to ours to celebrate the new year with us and they stayed overnight and had breakfast in the morning before they set off home to empty their camper.

Update

Lucy and Adi’s house update at end of December

Well that’s it for 2020, watch this space because 2021 is in progress.

Happy New Year everyone x

Visa Renewal August/Sept 2020

It’s August and as the temperature rises in the West, it drops in the evenings here in the south east as its the middle of winter! However, don’t be sad for us as its 20-25 degrees in the day and mostly sunny haha. Some people have said, “oh no how terrible for you to be stuck in Australia” – NO its not, its great. We have the company of the Aussie family and up until now, the freedom to go out and about without wearing a mask at all times as we have no Covid cases in Queensland, so we feel very lucky to be “stuck” here. However, as its nearly the end of August as I start to write, there have been outbreaks in Melbourne in the south and the virus cases are creeping up and coming north through Sydney. It has touched Queensland this week as the fall out from 3 very stupid women who went on a jolly to Melbourne in July, came back to Brisbane, lied to Police about their trip and didn’t isolate themselves. They had picked up the virus and happily spread it around our shopping malls, restaurants and its also in a Youth Detention Centre not far from us too now. So panic stations and some of us are wearing a mask to go out.

Making masks for everyone

Anyway back to August 1st, we were invited to one of TJ’s friends houses for brunch. Sam has become a good friend of mine too as we both have a love of anything crafty and particularly sewing. Sam and her husband Ollie put on a magnificent bbq breakfast with pancakes and hot turkish garlic toast and sausage and bacon butties etc. Our girls and their 2 children Nico and Lucy played together happily while the adults chilled and chatted in the garden. Its an amazing way to start the weekend. In the evening TJ hosted a family quiz night with Adam as marker. Bob, I and Sara were in Team A and Lucy and family in team B. Scores were very close with each team nudging to the front all the way through but with a fail on the last round of Music (which Bob and I are miserably poor at) Lucy’s team won. Bring on the next one !

Sunday was delegated to changing doors. Adam and TJ had gone to Bunnings (the equivalent of B & Q) last week and spotted a new solid wood door to replace the flimsy one from the Rumpus room into the garage, and at a bargain price so they “bagged it” and then decided to also replace the back door from the Rumpus room to the outside deck. So guess what Bob and Adam were doing Sunday ? Yep hanging the new doors that Bob had been painting all week.

Not a pretty picture but I thought he looked funny

Bob has a dentist appointment ! He is in pain so finally he decided to take the plunge and go, they put this clear thing in his mouth to keep it open and he looked so funny. Sorry Bob, this is the start of a journey to get his new dentures. I have restarted Zumba with Tj, its for seniors but the pace is good for both of us and now we are getting used to the routine moves we are getting better. We received good news from Lucy this week too, they have been granted planning permission for the changes to their house extension plans, looking forward to seeing some bricks laid after nearly 4 years!

At the weekend it was Adam and TJs 12th wedding anniversary so we celebrated by driving up to Bribie Island (about 1hr 15mins ) and staying overnight in an AIRBNB.

It was really funny, the house we stayed at was clean but oh so dated, going back to the 70’s I think. We had 3 bedrooms on one side of their bungalow which was cut in half by an opaque wall in the hall. We had the use of the back garden and a patio area with a sofa and table and a kitchenette. It was ok, cheap and cheerful but as soon as we had unpacked we went out to explore and take the kids to the beach. Dinner was fish and chips after a good long walk along the waters edge, watching the bats coming out for the night and then a pelican hung around the cafe hoping for scraps but we didn’t have anything left, it was so scrummy. The whole weekend was lovely and relaxing, Bob and I did some shopping and Adam and TJ took the kids to see a film at the cinema on Sunday. Before lunch we stopped off at the island Museum where the girls did a quiz searching for items and their reward was a bag of goodies. We had a lovely Sunday lunch at the Sandstone Hotel which stands on the edge of the water before the bridge across to the island. We took a walk along the pier to work off lunch before we set off for home.

The next week was usual stuff, Zumba on Monday, Golf for Bob Tuesday, Wednesday Mia has gone off to school looking pretty for school photos and Sam came over for a sewing day and we made purses, Mia Scouts Wednesday evening and Thursday I went to Golf with Bob and beat him hands down ! haha Celebrated on the way back by popping into my favourite material shop and stocking up while their sale is on.

Week 3 was busier, both Bob and I had dental appointments at the beginning of the week, his for some fillings and first lot of impressions for his new dentures and mine to have my denture fitted. They were made very quickly, only 2 and a bit weeks so I am pleased to be able to fill the gap, but it feels like a brick in my mouth when he put it in as its twice the size of my last 1 tooth denture – just have to get used to it ! Afterwards Bob took me to a golf discount shop as he wanted a new club – heheh he should never take me too as I found a new skirt and top at a bargain price and he had to buy them for me ! Then I made him book a tee time for Thursday at Ipswich Golf so I could try them out – I think it was all too much for him as he felt ill by the weekend and developed a cough and had to get Covid tested. All good though, test was negative .

On Saturday we went to Ipswich for the day, none of us had visited this place before so we just went on an exploration. We started off at the City park mini zoo. Because of Covid we had to queue for quite sometime to get in, although it was free there was a limit of the the amount of people allowed and everyone seemed to have decided to visit today ! However, it was a lovely setting and the girls enjoyed looking at the animals. We found more things to climb on and pose on and we explored the science museum and shops. We had a burger lunch in an “American diner” which was extremely tacky when we got inside but we laughed and made the most of it. On the way home we stopped at an outdoor swim pool and the girls enjoyed an hours water play with Daddy – everyone else decided it was too cold to go in !

Adam bought electric gubbins for the garage doors and they spent most of Sunday getting them fitted right. So glad they are done though as its so easy to go out and forget to lock the garage doors, whereas now they lock automatically. To finish off the week The Block starts Sunday night (a 12 week show about 5 couples competing to renovating 5 houses and make the most profit).

The last week of August I got my haircut, the hairdressers have moved into smaller premises so its a bit cramped and with Covid restrictions its very quiet. We go to a Hair Academy and let the students cut our hair for a very small price but we are very happy with the cuts as they are supervised and do it right. Bob wasn’t going to have his cut but the Teacher, Caron, persuaded him to have a tidy up as she had a male barber there training to be a stylist for ladies who didn’t have anything to do ! Bob isnt really well enough to golf on Tuesday so he stays at home. However Thursday he feels fit to play so off he went. I have been playing with some Acrylic Paint pouring stuff so while he was away I had a play – no pictures yet until I am happy with the results. Friday I needed to return something to Sam so Bob said I had to drive ! I did drive all the way there and back – scarey because I just don’t drive these days.

Fridays have become busy, this week Mia had a pyjama day at school, Zoe goes to Superstars dance class in the morning, Mia has drama after school and then they both go swimming lessons so dinner is always later on a Friday but this week we went to the Leagues Club across the road and treated ourselves to dinner out – yummy. Afterwards we have games night so the girls can choose what board games they want to play until bedtime. So far their favourite is Sequence for kids or Uno card game that Mia is really good at and usually beats us all.

Finishing off this last week of August Adam and TJ hired a babysitter and we went to TopGolf with 2 of their friends Rita and Ben who hadn’t tried this place. Its a very large driving range on 3 floors and you hit your golf ball out into a field of targets. Scores are made for hitting the ball further away and nearer the centre of each target. We have some drinks and snack food and enjoyed a laugh for a couple of hours.

Sunday is Mias school class get together at Bulimba, a bouncy castle for the kids and time for the parents to catch up and chat as Covid restrictions have made that difficult. Bob and I went to join them but couldn’t get a coffee as they had turned the machines off ?? We wandered into the village and found our own coffee shop and had a coffee and read the paper in peace, 20 kids screaming wasn’t our cup of tea anyway ! Bob is trying not to think about tomorrow as his dentures have arrived and he has to have 4 teeth out. Oh and Zoe has a joke – question What are you doing under there? Reply Under where ? Zoe – AHHH you said Underwear !!! she thinks its hilarious.

Sunday night as Mia was getting into bed she asked about Grandads teeth he was having out – what would happen to them? she asked. I replied that they would be thrown away so she asked if she could have them?? Why?? Well apparently the fairies give you money for teeth, so she might make something on them?? lol what an entrepreneur ! Monday morning went better than expected. I dropped Bob off at the dentist, told Dr Andy to be gentle with him and left to go for my walk. Everytime Bob goes to the dentist its usually an hour at least and this time the dentist has allowed 2 hrs so I walk a couple of kms into the centre of the village and back, pick up a coffee and sit in the car until he is ready. About 1.5 hrs after leaving him I get a call to say they are nearly finished with him so I went in. We can’t believe the difference in his face and his smile now. It was worth all the money to get this … Bob relaxed for the rest of the day and sipped liquids and popped the paracetamols when the pain started.

Our new smiles

September

Tuesday morning and we are back at the Dentist, Dr Andy wants to check everything is ok. Bob hasn’t slept well, the front of his mouth is very sore where they took out 4 teeth and he is struggling to put in and take out the denture. He is assured that all is well and to just keep taking the tablets and only eat soft food for a few days. To take his mind off it we go for a drive to the coast at Manly and had a walk in the sea breeze then a coffee and ginger beer in our favourite place in the Marina.

Towards the end of the week, school has a teacher training day so Adam, TJ and the girls go down to the Gold Coast for a few days away and to celebrate Fathers Day. Friends of Adam and TJ and their children go too and Bob and I get some quiet time to ourselves and the chance to wash the dining chair covers. We drive down Saturday morning to join them for breakfast croissants and then drive to Sams holiday apartment to spend the day with them in their pool and have a bbq. Bob and I babysat the girls in the evening to give Adam and TJ some free time. The apartment in the Hotel is beautiful, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a full kitchen and we have a very comfy sofa bed in the lounge. From the balcony we can see the sea and next to the hotel is a hotel where they are putting people who are in isolation for COVID, very interesting watching the goings on there, police in and out all day and night. Sunday after the excited girls had given daddy their box of presents they had made and Adam had given Bob a lovely new polo shirt, the girls spent the morning in the hotel pool. Tj packed up our things and we checked out at 12 noon and drove 300 yds to the restaurant TJ had booked for lunch. Edgewater was what it said it was, on the edge of the water and the food was lovely. On the way home we stopped off at the Outlet Shopping Centre but the girls had fallen asleep in the car so we left TJ with them and had a quick look round. Adam need to take back a pair of trainers he had bought there that had come apart. Luckily they were very helpful, said it was a known problem and promptly replaced them with a new pair of a more expensive different model – lucky Adam.

Back to work, school, day care Monday morning for some, after a nice weekend away. Bob had a check up at the dentist, then the garden to do and the cars needed the sand hoovering out from the beach and I had a pile of washing and ironing. Tj and I braved Zumba again as we had missed 3 weeks with dental appointments and colds. Monday night Zoe came home with a picture she had done, I looked at it and said “ooo thats ….. mmmm…” ARTISTIC Zoe interjected ! laugh haha where does she hear these words? This week we received news that our visa application to extend our time here had been granted, a huge relief for us as our current visa was going to run out next week! Now we can relax again without the worry of having to travel half way round the world in the current climate. I got some sewing done this week, a dress for Zoe and a wizard outfit for Halloween (the pattern and material I bought 4 years ago here and never got round to finishing it so I added a bit to the length and the sides and now it fits Zoe. ) Here is a picture of Zoe wearing a red cape that I made for Mia 4 years ago too! Mia also wanted a scout camp blanket so I have been sewing on all her badges ready for the next camp- I still have Zoe’s badges to sew on hers too.

Bob and I played golf together again Thursday and this time he beat me – but not by much, however the kangaroos thought I deserved to win, really – they told me so

In my new skirt and top, chatting with the locals

During Saturday night, someone tried to break into the next door neighbours house and also a house down the road. We didn’t know anything about it until I saw the police there Sunday morning. Adam went round to find out what was happening as Merle the neighbour, is in her 80s and lives alone. Apparently it was kids, about 7pm who broke a window but couldn’t open the grill behind so gave up. Adam checked his CCTV and saw them walking past our house but the garden camera just didn’t come round quite far enough to see them on her property. Saturday evening was the Scout Gang Show, Tj and Adam took the girls, I said I would go when Mia or Zoe was in it.

On Sunday Zoe had a birthday party to go to in Bulimba so we joined Adam and TJ afterwards and took the girls to NOM NOM’s icecream parlour for a treat – they loooove this icecream, especially the chocolate flavour – can you guess ? lol .

Week 3 of September I am waiting for the results of the WASPI case in court for us 50’s women to get our pension at 60 and not have to wait until we are 66 or 67 – sad news that it wasn’t to be and I still have to wait – such a travesty – Bob you still have a kept woman !! Mia loves drama group at school but wants to do more so she has a trial with another group this week, it went well but the cost is very high and the times don’t suit at the moment. Tj talked to the school and they are going to increase what they do next term so we are going to wait and see what they offer. Now we have a new visa we have to renew our Medicare (reciprocal medical with UK) which involves another long form, and I have a drs appointment to get more prescription tablets.

The boys have organised a Dads night out, so TJ and I plan on a face pack, indian head massage and a good chic flic movie – no it wasn’t a scary one …

Every year Toowoomba put on a flower carnival, its apparently beautiful but with Covid, not sure what will happen this year but we decide to spend Saturday in Toowoomba and booked a table for dinner in a restaurant in the city centre. We pack a picnic lunch and leave early to get there as its nearly 2 hrs drive and we want to fit in so much. The parks are magnificent, we watch a chalk artist, visit a museum and a craft fair and a market. In the afternoon we went to a lookout point with views to die for and we eat ice cream, we missed a parade in the city but the girls had a great time in a park playground for an hour wearing themselves out. We also spent some time in the Japanese Garden with its fountains, ducks, beautiful blossom trees and bridges over little brooks. We had dinner and headed for home with the girls fast asleep in the car in 2 mins.

On Sunday Adam and TJ went to a camping exhibition, they are toying with buying a trailer tent. They like camping but the idea of sleeping off the ground is appealing. We had the girls and we made birthday cards for Bob, had our nails painted then they helped make a batch of tomato ketchup and some jelly sweets. Zoe insisted on wearing her gum boots and Grandad had to build a tower with magnetic triangles so that Zoe could smash it down – apparently its really funny to do that lol. When mummy and daddy returned they had lots of information and started looking at hiring a camp trailer for a trip to test out the campers they like.

Mia is on holiday from school for 2 weeks now but Zoe still goes to daycare. Monday and Thursday she goes to Vacation Club at the school because she likes the things they are doing. Tuesday Bob is golfing so I have Mia to myself and we do some baking today, making anzac biscuits and some colouring in. Wednesday we take Mia to the outdoor swimming pool, the water is still very cold but its ok after a few minutes. After she had exhausted both of us, chasing her and throwing her around in the pool we all had a rest and took in the warm sunshine.

Friday morning the family go off for a long weekend in a hired camper trailer, they are going north to Noosa on the coast and the whole idea is to try out using two or three models that they like the look of, to see if its worth the money to spend on buying one maybe next year. Bob and I are happy to stay in the house and have a quiet weekend- really we don’t feel left out ! Its Bobs birthday on Monday so we have a nice quiet weekend, pottering and enjoying the weather and time together. Monday morning we go off to the Glen Hotel for breakfast at 8.30am and are immediately disappointed because we were expecting a huge buffet breakfast where you just eat what you want for a set price – NO its all cancelled due to COVID so we have a cooked breakfast outside under a canopy from a pop up shed – not the most romantic of breakfasts !

Happy Birthday Bob

Afterwards we went for a walk and did some shopping where I got my anniversary presents and back home for the afternoon to put our feet up and have a read – ah bliss. The evening we walked to a restaurant with the intention of having a pizza but when we got there – no Pizzas on Mondays – of course ! The kids are back Tuesday from their adventures, full of all the likes and dislikes of camper trailer camping but mostly good. We have a big discussion about their trip over a nice evening dinner with them and TJ has bought a cake for Bob so we all have a big slice for dessert.

September is coming to an end and with it the Spring weather is in full swing here, hitting high 20’s during the day and still mid teens in the evening. The Covid cases are peaking in the South of Australia but we still haven’t had more than a handful of cases in Brisbane so thinking ourselves very lucky to be here with the love and support of the Aussie family. I hope that everyone of our friends and family are keeping safe and well, especially those I don’t get the time to talk to much. Big hugs everyone and hope to see you in 2021.

June 2020 – Still here

The Mural begins

Well we are still here and no sign of the Virus receding at the moment so we are happy to stay put in relative safety- compared to Europe. Tj was delighted and began her new list of things to keep me busy – lol . The Mural is now finished and I have moved onto the next project but in the meantime Tj found a set of monkey bars with swings on, on Gumtree – free , buyer to dismantle! Adam and Bob and TJ set off to pick it up and in no time it was installed in the garden ….. TJ said its a shame its green, the trampoline and the other swing and seesaw are black – “Bob could you paint this black please?” she said.

Well he did and the girls love it, it’s amazing how quickly they get confidence to climb to the top and Mia’s strength has improved tremendously and she can now monkey swing all the way across.

This week Adam got his bike serviced so Bob, Adam and Mia cycled to the park and Tj and I with Zoe went in the car with all the chairs, games, food stuff etc .We met up with friends for a picnic, still social distancing and not sharing our food but the children loved playing with their friends again and it was good to chat to other people.

The next week was quiet, Adam and TJ working and the girls at school and day care. Bob was gardening and car cleaning and I was finishing my artwork in the garden. The neighbours who overlook the wall I have painted said it was a lovely picture so at least they are happy looking at it instead of a blank wall. I was quite pleased with it myself as I haven’t done anything like this before.

My Masterpiece

This next week is exciting because we are going on a little holiday up to Caloundra, about 1hr30 mins north along the coast. On Monday, Tjs friend Sam, and now my friend too, came over for a sewing day, its so lovely to find a fellow crafting soul. We made little bags for travelling, very useful when you have a holiday looming.

busy busy

Tuesday morning, Bob had gone to take the girls to school and Tj and I were chatting, when we heard a screech of brakes…. we waited and then BANG ! there it was, an accident. Right on the corner of our road, we went over to see what had happened and one man was in his car in shock, the other had moved his car into our road and got out, he was ok. Luckily a first aider appeared from one of the houses and took everything in hand. The man out of the car called his partner and she arrived and gave him what for… it was her car and it was the second one he had written off in 12 months! oops bit of domestic there so we stepped away. The man in the car had just dropped his children off at school – luckily – he was taken to hospital in an ambulance very shook up but no visible injury.

Tj and Adam had their chat with Mias teacher online and were very pleased with the report on her progress. Just a bit more reading practice needed so I found some Roald Dahl books on marketplace and TJ picked up some Billie Brown books, this should help.

Thursday arrives and we are all excited to get away for a few days after 3 months in the house more or less. We left around 10am and drove up, stopping at The Maze for the morning as we couldn’t check in until 3pm. The entrance has a waterfall cascading across your path but a magic eye stops it as you approach, this fascinated the girls who thought it was magic. Its a great place for them to run around and get lost looking for clues to solve the puzzle. There is a tower right in the middle so if you do lose them you can climb up and see where they are. We took sandwiches for lunch and had ice creams afterwards in the café. We arrived at the cabin which was modern with 3 bedrooms and all amenities and a very large tv, we unpacked and then went out to get our bearings and look around. There were lots of Pelicans around, I love Pelicans, so I was delighted to see them sitting on the street lights. For dinner we had taken a meal with us that TJ had cooked the day before so we just warmed it up. Friday morning we had tickets to visit The SeaLife Centre, we were one of the first in and spent the whole morning looking at the wonderful fishes and sea life. When we returned to the cabin the girls wanted to go in the swimming pool which was heated but only to about 26 degrees. Brr it was a bit chilly but after a couple of hours playing they were happy tired and ready for fish and chips for dinner. Saturday was market day, we wandered through the stalls, stopping for refreshments then lunch and the beach in the afternoon. We travelled to a beach at Curramundi Lake where we watched some people parachuting out of an airplane and dropping onto the beach. We had lunch and the girls played in the warm shallow water. Sunday morning we went for a walk along the beach with the girls, it was a bit breezy today but we picked up litter and put it in the bin, I think Mia gets a scout badge for this. Tj had stayed at the cabin packing up their things so she came and joined us for lunch in a restaurant on the front before they set off for home to give them time to prepare for school, day care and work on Monday morning. Bob and I stayed an extra night as we had booked golf on a nearby course for Monday morning.

Adam and TJ have ordered a carport to be built in front of the garages, it was supposed to be delivered today and the men coming on Tuesday to fit it but they are delayed. The carport arrives and sits on the grass until Thursday we are told – oh no Thursday is my birthday. Luckily they are delayed again so the installation is set for Friday – phew. Tuesday we get a delivery, its Adams new BBQ cover for his posh BBQ – well it covers most of it but there needs to be a slight alteration …..Mum … Haha, out comes my sewing machine again, for a $99 basic machine its performing extremely well so I set to making it fit, cutting a bit off here and adding a bit there … now its perfect. Thursday morning and I am woken by the Beatles song, When I’m 64 lol. The girls make me breakfast and give me presents before they go off to school and Bob takes me out for lunch and a shopping trip. I get a new cardigan, some tops and new ankle boots as the weather is cooler and I only brought summer clothes. I am also getting bored with the same clothes I have been wearing for the past 8 months. In the evening Adam and TJ take us all out to the Custom House Restaurant in the city. Its a beautiful building and the meal is delicious, washed down with a very nice glass of red.

Friday the men arrive to start the carport but a couple of hours or so in and they drill a hole in the support post in the wrong place ! Doh have to order another one, it wont be ready until Monday now. Oh well. At the weekend, Adam and Tj have one more treat for me, tickets to the Planetarium at Mount Coot-tha and a picnic in the botanical gardens park afterwards. Unfortunately the video they showed was much shorter than normal and only about 20 people allowed inside at a time but still worth a visit. Monday morning the installers are back and the carport is looking like a carport but they still haven’t finished it and have to come back Tuesday.

In the meantime its half term school holidays so Mia is at home this week. She loves painting and I want to expand her mind with different types, we have done watercolour and that was very successful so now for some acrylic pouring – so much fun but oh so messy lol

JULY

Tuesday and its July already and we still haven’t got the carport finished but they arrive early and in a couple of hours its done.

At last the carport is done and we love it.

Thursday Bob has booked a tee time at Karana Downs golf course, its a bit of a trek, about 45 mins but its a nice day and the golf is good. While we were out Adam found some artificial turf in a skip so he filled the car and asked us to make it fit the grassed area under the new carport as that grass would now die with no sun on it. lol it was a jigsaw ..

Busy weekend with Bob and I visiting the “Op Shops” that’s charity shops to you, for some denim material and some work trousers for Bob. In the afternoon, pizza and playtime with friends at the local Minninipi park, all the kids played lovely together. Then Saturday we were invited to an ex neighbours house for dinner. Their house is a new build, valued at around 1.4 million $, its a 6 bedroom house with a hairdressing salon in the basement and magnificent views of the city from the upstairs balcony. Dinner was Mexican and delicious. They had also just bought a new car and Tj has been looking for a 7 seater car so we climbed all over it and asked lots of questions to see if it was still on her list of possibilities – it was not because the tow weight was too low.

Sunday Tj had volunteered us for helping put posters up in Mia’s school … I didn’t realise they were stick on posters and rather large and no one wanted the job so I offered and ended up putting 16 of them up.

Monday morning and TJ has persuaded me to try Zumba with her, its Zumba Gold which is for seniors so I decide to have a go and actually enjoyed it. I will go again. Then off to the hairdressers for a good cut as its been 6 weeks or more and I cant do a thing with my hair!

My first Zumba class

Tj has been researching 7 seater cars, who would believe there was so much difference in their size, towing capacity, tow hitch design, internal design and price? Well Tj knows almost anything you need to know about them now and at the weekend they went off to all the garages to look at and test drive the “possibles” left on their list. Afterwards she had her 18 down to 2 or 3 options. On Wednesday they found a Nissan Pathfinder online with everything they wanted on it at a good price but unfortunately when they phoned the garage it had just been sold. Amazingly they then found another one almost the same but a model up at around the same price. The Volvo Garage in the city still had it and the price was negotiable so we dropped everything and went to look at it. The Salesman gave us the keys and let us go test drive it for 20 mins on our own. Adam put it through its paces, we stopped and turned it upside down, checking it over completely. (not literally though haha). It had belonged to a doctor and looked like it hadn’t had anyone in the backseats at all. Tj went into her bargaining mode when we returned with it and happily she struck a deal that was good for all. Now we just had to wait about a week for the paperwork to be finalised.

Thursday its raining and the school class catchup in the park is cancelled so Bob and Mia bake a cake for tea. In the evening some of the mums of Mias classmates have arranged a meal out. Tj invited me to join them for a Mexican meal – yes please !

concentrating very hard not to spill any

A lovely evening with the mums of Mias classmates

It seems to have been ages since we had anyone over for a meal so TJ invited two families for brunch on Saturday morning. Adam made wonderful bacon butties and everyone brought something so we had a real feast. It was just so nice to sit and chat and enjoy the food and the sunshine and the children all just played. Afterwards we left the men to wash up and look after the children and us girls went to play Escape Hunt. So much fun and we cracked the code and escaped with only 19 seconds to spare .

Tuesday 14th July is Bastille day in France and Mias school are having a Bastille Day celebration, they asked the students to dress up in anything French. Mia has a book on famous women and she chose Coco Chanel as her person. I had been looking round the second hand shops for a couple of weeks for items and Tj found her a classic dress and this is how she went to school that day.

This week was a week of firsts, Tj met her new colleague from work in the park because they are all still working from home, she hasn’t seen him . Mia is back at the Scout hut for scouts after 3 months of Zoom meetings and the girls are back to swimming classes. I have been busy making new cushions for the outside chairs and I had a sewing day with Sam at her house this time, making a new mat for my sewing machine with pockets on the front for bits and pieces and a sewing scraps bin for my desk using patchwork. The old Lancer car being replaced with the Nissan Pathfinder has been serviced and put up for sale and within a couple of days we have a buyer coming to look at it.

Friday 17th and Bob and I are just about to leave the house and Adam got a call to say that all the paperwork was done and we could pick up the new car. We arranged to go with the girls at 3.30pm and picked it up, Tj dropped the girls at swimming straight after and we all went to Birkdale Fish and Chip shop for a celebratory dinner. Saturday morning the lady came to inspect the Lancer and she agreed to buy it.

So Saturday morning after the Lancer had gone we went out for a drive, all together in the same car, to Maleny Dairy Farm. Tj had arranged for us to do the tour of the farm and how they get and process the milk. It was a beautiful sunny day and we got to taste the milk from Natasha the cow , feed the week old calves, stroke Strawberry the sheep and watch the automated milking. The girls thought it was hilarious that Natasha pooped while Grandad was tasting the milk from her. The processing machines weren’t working on a weekend but we could see them all. There was a museum of old equipment that they used to use and we also watched a video of the family who own and have run the farm for many years. Finally we were given tasters of all their products, milk, custard and yoghurts. On the way home we stopped off at a beauty spot with a waterfall . The girls have decided to call the new car Poppy Pathfinder !

The next week I had to personalize the girls cups, their wellington boots, because they are identical and their new money boxes. Tj wants them to learn to spend some, save some and give some to charity. The most exciting news was that 6 of us girls went to Bingo in the local club, never been before and some of us have never played Bingo. We caused a stir on entering because we didn’t know what we were doing or what we had to buy but eventually we were sorted with games for the first half of the session. We settled down and the first game was quite slow then the next one got quicker and it was hard to keep up! However, half way through I called a house and won $70! I was so happy. Then Sam, my crafting friend who had never played Bingo before said I am only waiting for number 47. The caller said that this being the jackpot round if house was called in 56 numbers or less and she had called 50 numbers. 5 more numbers were called and on the 56th number they called 47 – Sam leapt out of her chair shouting Bingo and won $1000. We were all stunned and as we were only playing the first half, we quickly left with our winnings and went to a bar to celebrate.

The last weekend of the month was very wet, it didn’t seem to want to stop raining. However, Tj had booked us all in to the snow play area in Southbank near the city and although, due to Covid is wasn’t as spectacular or as large this year, the girls had a great time playing until their fingers and toes were too cold. Mia earnt part of a Scout badge for building a snowman too. Afterwards we all had hot chocolate and toast to warm us up.

The last week saw Adam buy new doors for the rumpus to garage and the rumpus to garden, they only went for some screws or something and came back with a 650$ door for 150$ – what a bargain ! and a back door with glass in to let in more light. So guess what Bobs job this week was? – painting 2 new doors. He has finally finished repainting the deck table and chairs so he thought he was finished haha.

I have finally got behind the steering wheel too, just as they sold the little grey Lancer, so I have had to move over to the big Outlander car. However, it seems easy enough to drive, apart from the fact the steering wheel is on the wrong side, its automatic and very large! I have just lost my confidence a bit not driving for nearly 10 months now but the girls gave me hugs when I drove to pick them up from school and day care.

Look forward to August blog with our trip to Bribie Island, golf, cooking and sewing projects and much more….

March – May 2020 The Corona Virus hits

Lovely hugs from the girls

Its March 16th and we have been back from New Zealand a couple of days, the Corona Virus is all over the news, we were so lucky to return to Brisbane when we did. Adam and TJ were booked to go to Vietnam in a couple of days on Tj’s birthday but they don’t know what to do or what is happening? The night before they are due to go they decide not to risk going to Vietnam but they will be losing $3500!

Tj’s birthday breakfast made by the girls

The girls make a special breakfast for her and give her presents, we are all a bit sad that they are losing their holiday which was to celebrate Adams 40th birthday too next week. However, later in the day they received an email from the travel agent to say they have cancelled their holiday due to the Corona Virus Pandemic and they will be in contact soon with a voucher for the full amount. Whooooo.

The restrictions begin, and the shops are manic, soon we have empty shelves, can’t buy toilet rolls, flour, pasta and rice!! The majority of shops are still open but everyone is wary, Bob and I decide to self isolate because of my cough and our age but the incidents of the virus are very few in Queensland at the moment.

Adams 40th birthday comes and goes, we looked at going out for dinner somewhere special but restaurants are closed now so we have a nice takeaway and a film evening at home instead, maybe we can celebrate bigger next year instead?

For the last 2 weeks the Government have been saying that schools will remain open but now they are closing them for everyone, except for those children of “essential workers”. Adam and TJ are working from home so I am volunteered to school Mia. Frantically TJ races round the shops for Educational Books and we scour the internet looking for subjects, resources, and any information we can find to put together a weeks worth of schooling! In the future, schools and government education departments will have resources organised and be emailing her work to us but for the moment its down to us. I must say between, Adam, TJ and I we have a good timetable of subjects organised for her.

It begins well and Mia enjoys being at home but a week of one to one learning is very tiring for her and for me. Adam and TJ decide to share Thursdays to give me a day off and on Fridays TJ doesn’t work so we only do the minimum learning and spend the rest of the day playing games, crafting, painting etc. This gives Bob, who hasn’t played golf for a few weeks now, the opportunity to find a golf course that is still open and books a round for us both.

We can’t go anywhere now, only the supermarkets, pharmacys and DIY shops are open so Bob, with Adams help when needed, sets about TJs list of jobs to do around the house. The girls Cubby house is in desperate need of finishing and when he has done it, the girls and I tart up the inside with a lot of fun throwing paint around inside! Then they add a deck below for the paddling pool and when the weather gets cooler, we put up hammocks for my afternoon read ??? or when the girls let me have a go !

I am sewing when I get time, new Pjs for TJ and I, cushions and curtains for the girls cubby house. Among other things, I have re-covered a bench seats outside, the hall seat and a pouffe.

Every morning we try to go for a walk as this is allowed, just 1-2 kms with Mia to help settle her before schooling. We decide that it would be a good opportunity to get Mia riding her bike without stabilizers. We set a target of 1 to 2 weeks and take her to the local park, after half an hour of falling off and “I can’t do this crying” she actually peddled a short way on her own. Try again tomorrow…. Over the course of 5 days she got better and better and she was cycling in a more or less straight line on her own. Daddy said when she is cycling properly on her own he will look at buying her a bigger bike – yeh go Mia. After 2 weeks of almost every day practicing she is off like a rocket and Daddy is looking at a new bike.

With everyone at home all day and weekends, we have started Friday night games night with the girls. They love these activities and so far we have had Uno card games, Junior Monopoly and Junior Sequence – needless to say the girls often beat us hands down – to their delight and giggles -but we do have so much fun.

STA Travel Agents emailed me early in April to say that our flights have been cancelled for May 3rd and to contact them to organise replacement flights?? How on earth can we say when the virus will be clear and its safe for us to travel? I call them and ask if I can wait and see what happens and they said ok, give them a call towards the end of April to re-assess. Good job we went to New Zealand as our 6 month visa restarted and it is now valid until September 14th. Tj is so excited that we arent going home yet, so many more things she wants making ….

The laundry is very basic so Bob strips it out and paints it while Adam and Tj get some new worktop, sink and cupboards. I add a cheeky sign for the wall and now we have a much more user friendly laundry. Next he puts up cupboards on the wall of my craft and sewing corner, so much easier to find everything now. His next big project is to re paint the patio table and 6 chairs … pictures next time.

The day before Good Friday I managed to find a dentist to look at a tooth that had been giving me some pain over the past couple of weeks. He x-rayed it and informed me that there was a crack down the whole length of it into the root. Under normal circumstances (pre -covid) they would have attempted to save the tooth but not knowing if they would have to close at any moment I decided to let them take it out ! I now have a big gap, will need to get it filled in the future.

Easter Saturday Adam put their tent up in the garden as the weekend away with the Scouts was cancelled. The girls were very excited to be having a “sleepover” in the garden and Adam and Bob stayed with them Saturday night and Adam and TJ did Sunday night shift. Otherwise it was a quiet affair, with everywhere in lockdown more or less, we did have an egg hunt in the garden and the house which took some time to find all the eggs (Mia did say last year it was too easy ??)

April 14th and drama — Mia’s 3rd and front tooth comes out leaving a big gap in her smile and some blood ….. Zoe has the most sensitive stomach and as soon as she sees the blood, she is heaving – poor Zoe, I have to take her away from it quickly.

Anzac day is April 25th and a holiday, We are all outside the house at 6am for the dawn service. Mia and Zoe have made candle holders with painted poppies on them and Mia in her Joey Scout uniform, breaks the flag on her homemade flag pole. Only 1 other person was in the street that we could see but it felt good to be there for the minute silence. Zoe said she knew why we were being quiet – “to remember the soldiers ” she said.

Adam and TJ have found a bike for Mia, its almost brand new but its 90km away on the Gold Coast, with restrictions of no more than 50km from home, we can’t go and get it but the lady offers to drive 40km and meet them just off the motorway. Its too good an offer to miss as its an expensive bike at a great price so off they went to collect it. When Mia saw it she was delighted and rode it perfectly as she tested it in the garden.

After the long weekend break we are back to schooling for Mia. Zoe’s daycare has stayed open throughout so she continues her normal routine of Monday to Thursday which has helped to concentrate Mia on her school work. We have made Elmer elephants out of milk bottles, for a school project she made a diorama model of a Panda habitat, we have learnt about money by buying and selling toys in the cubby house, using coins borrowed from Grandads purse and Grandad has done PE on the deck with Joe Wicks – far too fast for me !

This week I talked to the travel agents and said that as our visa is valid until September 14th, we have no thoughts about travelling until its safe so can we leave it open? They say its ok, so now, instead of packing to come home, we could be here much longer . My hair is growing fast and I look a mess, can’t get it cut so Tj kindly offers to chop off some long bits – it felt so much better to tidy it up.

3rd May arrives, it seems strange to not be packing to go home, happy to stay but sad for Lucy and the family as they were looking forward to big hugs. Its a lovely day and restrictions on travelling and going to the park for recreation and picnics are lifted so we pack up lunch and cycle to the local park for some fun.

Mothers day in Australia is May 10th and this year its a double in the house as I am still here so the girls treat TJ and I to breakfast in bed (normal not allowed food upstairs so this is a treat). There are presents and cards for us both and vouchers for foot massages, help in the house and shopping trips when we can. We start with the foot massage … Bob and Adam both decide to bake a cake for us, Bob a Victoria Sandwich and Adam a Chocolate Fondant Cake – had to try both to see who won… mmmm might have to test them again haha!

The Queensland Government have said that children in Prep and Year 1 along with years 11 and 12 can go back to school on May 11th, it was a sad morning as we sent Mia off to school, the house was so lonely but I must admit it was great to get jobs done that we had put on hold while Mia was at home. There were a few tears from Mia going into school after 5 weeks away but she came home in the afternoon happily telling us all about her day. In 2 weeks the rest of the children can return to school, I’m sure lots of parents are very happy about this.

We are in the middle of May now and life is getting back to normal in that the girls are at school and daycare and Adam and TJ are working upstairs in the office so I can craft, paint or sew (or write blogs) while Bob is pottering in the garden. We have been playing 1 round of golf a week at the same course but as other courses start to open we have tried a different one, this week Hills Golf Course about 45 minutes drive away. The course was in good condition and although there were quite a few players, we managed to play without any holdups. On the last tee I spotted what I thought was a sprinkler head over in the longer grass? When I investigated I saw a long neck turtle who looked dead ??? I touched it gently with my foot and it moved – very strange creature !

Mia’s other front tooth is hanging but won’t come out ! Just before bed though, she jumped onto me to give me a goodnight kiss and her mouth hit the back of the sofa and knocked the tooth out – at last, but then there was a scramble trying to find it as it bounced between the cushions! Fortunately we did find it and the tooth fairy brought her $2 the next morning.

We have a varied selection of birds in and around the garden, some Minah birds come regularly and one of them we have called Chunky as it cries for its parents to bring it food regularly but its bigger and fatter than them?? We have parakeets and pigeons too but the latest ones are Cockatoos. They are so loud and big and they have found the next door neighbour has passion fruit on a bush, they are stealing them and then dropping them all over our garden. We collected them up and put them on the girls table and very soon they arrived and flew off with them.

The penultimate weekend of May and the activity is making beaded bookmarks with the girls, they were very inventive and made beautiful bookmarks.

The government have lifted restrictions this week on visiting other families at home so we had the first visitors to the house since march, for a bbq on the coldest day for ages. Adam has a super duper wall heater on the patio and for the first time we used it – and oh boy was it good, we sat outside for a lot longer than we would normally have. This last couple of days we have been experiencing a cold snap (its snowing in South Australia!) Temperatures dropped so much on Friday night that I had to put on the winter pjs that Tj bought me for Christmas, which is something I never thought would happen.

The last week of May started with much needed haircuts, we are both very smart now, if only we had somewhere special to go. The week flew by as Bob tended the garden and washed the cars, cleaned out the gutters and drains ready for any winter storms. Adam and TJ are looking at having a carport put on the front of the house so we have been looking at options, walking around the area looking at what everyone else has and then talking to companies- who would think there were so many combinations ? Bob has dug out great lumps of concrete from the lawns that used to have fence posts in them ready for the carport posts. I have been cooking – a bread and butter pudding, a fruit cake requested by Adam and finally on friday, a carrot cake to take to friends who had invited us all for dinner. Unfortunatley it didn’t make the friends house because we ate it – the smell was just too much to resist – so there I was in the evening, baking a second cake for them. I have had some crafting time, making cards and painting, at the moment I am in the middle of painting a “Mural in the Garden” – don’t ask – photos to follow when it is finished. Bob is back to playing golf on Tuesdays with his friends and we play together on a Thursday as the weather is much nicer for golf now. Friday evenings are games night, this week it was Uno cards and then Sequence for Juniors, great fun all round. Saturday Adam spotted a bike for sale locally, its the same as Mia’s but with the stabilizers, it was a bargain so they snapped it up and a couple of hours later Zoe was out testing it.

And then it was June ………

New Zealand

Its holiday time ! 10 whole days in New Zealand South Island travelling around in a hire car .

We arrived at Brisbane airport at 4pm and were through security quickly so settled down for a read until the flight was called. Everything on time we boarded and took off. The flight was just over 3 hrs and we landed at midnight NZ time. We had decided not to hire a car from the airport as we would be tired and then having to find our way to the hotel in Christchurch, so we took a taxi. We arrived at the hotel and checked in and went to our room – then I remembered the travel agent asking if we would be happy with a small room? Sure, we said, its only for a couple of nights haha – see picture taken with my back against the door!

Such a tiny room but it was ok for a couple of nights

After a walk the next morning we found the Avis car hire office and waited to be served. A nice lady began our reservation and then the computer system went down! “Ok” she said “I have everything I need, can you just sign here to say you have the car and I will email you everything later when the system comes back up ?” “erm but we haven’t seen the car yet,” I said? “That’s ok” she said all our cars are checked when they are returned it will be ok!!!! I wasn’t happy so I said I would be videoing the whole car and taking photos before we left – she shrugged. Bob sat in the car setting up the sat nav and finding his way round while I took about 10 mins of video – the car had only got 50,000kms on the clock but it had lots of scratches and dinks!

View down into the town

Finally we set off for the coast, stopping at a little place called Lyttelton where the first European settlers landed in 1850. We approached it through a 2km tunnel then dropped down to a quaint harbour village. This village was badly hit in the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 and much of its heritage buildings were destroyed but it now has an arty vibe with lots of cafes and bars and shops. We dropped in on the tourist office and the lady pointed us to the best place to visit and an “off piste” route to take in the wonderful scenery on the way.

Silo accomodation?

We set off for Akaroa, we took it steady as it is a 2 hr drive around some narrow country lanes. On the way we stopped at a craft shop in Little River and bought some bees wax (for my bees wax wraps I make) and noticed these Silos – I thought they were for sale but it was actually a holiday village and you stay in them? How fantastic? this is the link if you want to have a look https://www.silostay.kiwi.nz/book-now/gallery-2/ . The scenery was lovely, a beautiful blue sky, warm sunshine and green rolling hills as we made our way around the lake into Akaroa. We spent the whole afternoon there around the harbour, doing some window shopping, having lunch and just watching the world go by, waiting to see if any dolphins would show up – but they didn’t. Before it was too dark we drove back to Christchurch and went to a local Indian restaurant for dinner.

The restaurant wasn’t busy so we chatted to the owner who told us all about the earthquakes and explained that the photograph on his wall of Prince William was taken when he visited just after the earthquakes and he stayed for dinner in his restaurant because there was nowhere else open!

Indian Restaurant

The next morning we were off to Dunedin, some 360km away. We noticed there were a great number of cattle and not many sheep, and the land is very flat along this coastline. The houses have an english country village look but with wide streets. We stopped for a coffee and then by mid afternoon we were about half way so we pulled in at a place called Oamaro. This is a weird town, Steam punk and Victorian. The penguins apparently come onto the beach every evening to settle for the night but unfortunately we can’t wait that long. We eat and wander, take some photos and then we are on our way again to Dunedin.

Where are all the sheep?

At last we arrive in Dunedin, its been a long day but the adventure continues as we find our accommodation half a km up a track to a log cabin house. The owner meets us at the door and shows us to our room – its big and comfy (well anything is big compared to the last place) and one of the ducks greets us at the patio doors from our room .

Leithview Cottage

Once settled in we went into the town to explore. It has a very Scottish feel here, hence the Scottish name and the land is very hilly. The owner of the cottage told us that some years ago, the price of lamb dropped so low that farmers were going bankrupt and committing suicide because of their desperation, to survive, some changed to cattle farming. The 60 million sheep in New Zealand have been reduced to 20 million and overtaken by cattle so that’s why we saw so many cows in the fields on the drive down. The houses in this area are colonial and large as you can see from the pictures. We found it a buzzing town with lots of young people, bars and cafes. Apparently it’s the students from the University that fill the town during term time but when they go home for the holidays it’s a completely different place .

The next morning before we left we went to look for the 2 new born calves, only 3 days old.

We began the long drive across country to Queenstown its only about 285km but its much slower driving over the peaks, we were expecting it to take most of the day again. Scenery change again, from the flat lands of Christchurch to Oamaro then hilly to Dunedin and now its mountainous terrain. I must say that I am finding the amount of time we are spending on the road somewhat tiring. We have 4 nights in Queenstown so some time to explore, more time to relax too without Bob having to drive far.

Looking back on Dunedin as we leave
The terrain starting to get more hilly
A vehicle that overtook us on the road- how many dogs ?

The journey did take us most of the day but we did stop off at a village called Ranfurly for coffee. We walked into what I thought was a cafe as it had a big sign saying REFRESHMENTS outside, only to find it was a museum of the old train station haha. The lady pointed us to the cafe across the road which she recommended as the best coffee house in the village. We were sitting in the cafe looking out of the window and along came a vintage car, then another and another – we sat for a while and watched as the rally passed through the village before continuing.

Onward, after refreshments, to Queenstown, not sure what to expect but looking forward to being in the same place for a few days.

Roaring Meg is a turbulent stream that drives a hydro-electric power station and merges with the Kawarau River, which runs between the towns of Cromwell and Queenstown . It was very noisy but an amazing sight.

The last stop was the oldest Bungee jumping bridge, the A. J.Hackett Kawarau River Jump. Its just outside of Queenstown so as we were passing we stopped – wow – these people are mad mad mad and they are paying around $300 each for the privilege. However, there must be a lot of mad people because there was a constant jumper every 10 mins or so. The best ones were the ones who screamed loudly haha. There was also a zip wire that shot people down into a ravine at great speed (it was a cheaper option to the bungee jumping).

Moving on we found Queenstown and our hotel – its not quite what I expected – but we will see tomorrow. Time for something to eat, we have a room with a kitchen so we went shopping in the supermarket and bought food for 4 days and cooked a nice dinner.

Its Sunday and day 4 in New Zealand -time to explore. After a good breakfast in the apartment we set off for the town, I haven’t felt too well, a cold I had before we left has gone onto my chest as it usually does and I am now coughing !! Having to clear my throat regularly as everyone keeps looking at me – a lot of mumblings about this Corona Virus spreading from China??? Anyway we spent the morning exploring the town and walked alongside the water up into the Botanical gardens. Some people were playing Frisbee golf alongside the lake which looked like fun and I would have played too if I had felt well enough. Instead we found a nice spot on the edge of the water for a coffee and to watch the antics of the tourists who are here for adrenaline rushes!

We have decided to go to Milford Sound so have booked the trip for Monday morning, pick up at 5am ! We cooked a pasta dish in the apartment kitchen and had a bottle of wine and watched some tv before turning in early so we can get up at 4am.

Milford Sound is something like 4.5 hrs drive away – if we could fly there its only 30 mins but we have to drive around a mountain and the only road has been badly damaged from torrential rains and flooding a couple of weeks ago. Because the maintenance crew are working hard to repair the damage the only traffic allowed along the road are buses and local cars 4 times a day in convoy. We have to be at the rendezvous by 8am to join in the convoy or we can’t go, this way the maintenance men can work between the 2 convoys going and returning each day. Its freezing as we stand on the side of the road at 4.50am, luckily we are first to get on the bus when it arrives and grab the front seats. Bob doesn’t like coach travel unless he is driving or sitting in the front seats with a full view of the road. We set off and I snuggle down to catch up on some sleep until the sun comes up and we can see where we are going. We stop for a coffee and breakfast and the loo at Te Anau at 7.30am and then we join the convoy. The scenery was spectacular now it was light and we pulled over to look at the Mirror Lakes which, on a sunny day with no ducks on it, is a beautiful mirror image of the mountains on the water, today it was ok but not perfect .

Back on the bus Wayne the driver told us stories of his previous life in the army working in the area helping build bridges and roads to access Milford. The next stop was a beautiful spot, where a few years before a film crew used the backdrop for Mission Impossible and Tom Cruise was seen flying and hanging out of helicopters doing his own stunts.

The journey continued through all the damaged roads as you can see until we finally arrived at Milford.

The boat was ready waiting for us as we arrived at the terminal, tickets checked and we boarded at around 11am. Thank goodness they sell hot pizza slices and hot drinks. Its quite misty as we set sail and the recent rain has caused many beautiful cascading waterfalls. Normally there are only a few but today there were many.

returning to the port

The trip was over all too soon, by the time the mist had cleared and we had been out to the end of the bay and not seen the one and only seal on a rock, the 1.5 hour trip was done and we were sailing back into the port. As much as it was lovely, we also realised that maybe its not worth the cost and the 12 hr round trip to see it, we were disappointed that it was just a boat trip, expecting much more from it??

Anyway, we soon settled back onto the coach for the trip home back along the windy road in the convoy. We did get to see the first part of our outgoing journey in the light this time so lots more photo opportunities.

It was 6.30pm by the time we arrived back at Queenstown and we were stiff from sitting so long. We took a walk then cooked dinner and early to bed – it was a long day!

Tuesday morning I’m not feeling good, my cough is worse and I feel drained but we decide to take a stroll around the shops then stop for a coffee by the lake, taking in the views. We watched the parasailers, the jet boats and some strange 2 seater submarines that dived under the water then emerged vertically at great speed.

Bob wants to go on the gondola ride up the cliff, I don’t feel I should be closeting myself with people in a small space when I have a cough so I walked to the skyline with Bob and wave him off. Time to put my feet up and have a read in peace. An hour or so later Bob appears with an album of footage and photos to show me what I missed – bless him !

After 4 days in Queenstown it was nice to leave the hustle and bustle and get on the road again. Its a long 350km journey over the mountains so we set off early stopping at Wanaka long enough to take a picture of the lake, its more of a skiing area here but as its March, there is no snow, so onwards towards Haast. After a coffee stop the road took us along the coast with some spectacular views. We stopped for a quick wee and arrived at Fox mid afternoon. We are in the same Bella Vista Hotel Group but this time we don’t have a suite, just tea and coffee facilities. Fox is a tiny place, a couple of bars, a restaurant and a spar shop. Petrol station across the road and half a dozen places to book a helicopter flight to the Glacier. The only exciting thing was some Ferraris parked outside but they only stopped for a few minutes before racing off again.

After settling in, we took a drive about 5 kms down the road for the best view point to see the Glacier and Mount Cook as the sun went down.

I’m not feeling hungry so Bob went off to get a takeaway Indian, which when I smelt it, I did pinch some. Just down the road was the entrance to Minne Haha Walk, a forest walk loop where we were told the trees were alive with glow worms after dark. We set off as the light faded and walked into the forest, after a few minutes we saw some other people wandering around. We asked if they had seen any glow worms and they said yes, a bit farther in. We continued for about 15 minutes and spotted some in a low bush, we tried to take photos but they didn’t come out as it was pitch dark in here now. I got a bit scared because you couldn’t see anything at all. I was hanging onto Bob and had to put the light on my phone as I was afraid of tripping on the roots of the trees. We met up with lots of other people who had also walked for 20 minutes and not found the loop back to the start so we turned round and retraced our steps . I was so glad to get back to the road safely.

Thursday morning, I am still coughing, I don’t feel too bad but I don’t want to go up in a helicopter with my chest tight. Bob had decided he would like to go so he went up to book something straight after breakfast. He has a departure time of 11 am. I settled down in the sunshine on my balcony with a coffee and my book as Bob set off. He boarded the helicopter first, getting the front seat whilst a German couple and a New Zealand motorcyclist sat in the back. After a short flight up to the Glacier they landed, the Pilot pointed out the dirty snow was a result of the ash from the recent bush fires in Australia but this didn’t deflect from the spectacular views. The Glacier is presently 13 km long but has been steadily retreating over the last century. However, the sun was shining, it was a beautiful day and Bob said it was warm enough to have sunbathed on it! They were allowed a couple of minutes to walk around and take photos and then back into the helicopter to fly up to Mount Cook and then back down the Glacier to the heli-base.

After his exhilarating experience Bob took me for a walk to the Matheson Lake a few kms away. It was a picturesque walk, we had hoped that we would see another mirror lake but there was too much of a breeze. The path around the lake was easy walking and when we stopped to look at the lake I turned to see a little mouse sitting in the roots of a tree watching me. I stood for sometime watching him but he disappeared into the undergrowth as another couple approached. As we wandered along the path, we crossed over a long wooden suspension bridge where we had to wait for people to get off the bridge to get the photos. A very strange thing, I noticed a door knob screwed to a tree, could it be a secret doorway to the fairies?

Friday morning is our last day of travelling, we are heading for Greymouth to pick up the TransAlpine train back to Christchurch. Our train was leaving at 2pm and we had to drop the hire car off and pick up our tickets so we left Fox early again and set off on the shorter 180km trip. We had plenty of time, the scenery was amazing as we left Fox and we stopped at Wahapo lake on the way just to take a couple of photos as the setting was just beautiful. There were lots of cows in the fields along the route and some landslides had damaged some of the roads so good job we had allowed plenty of time. The train fare should have been around $200 but I left it too late to book and those seats were all sold out so we ended up paying nearly $400 for our seats. Our own fault, but no choice we had to be back in Christchurch for our flight back to Brisbane in the morning.

Our lunch stop was in a town called Hokitika, a bustling village of home grown crafts, greenstone glass, textiles and art. Plenty of cafe and restaurant choices for lunch among the grand buildings from the 1860’s goldrush days. After a walk along the beach and some window shopping we stopped for a toasted sandwich and a very large coffee, then we were ready for the final leg into Greymouth.

Arriving in Greymouth at 12.45 it took us a while to find somewhere to park the car as all the hire car spaces were filled. We went into the Avis office and explained about the computer going down and that we hadn’t received an email, as promised, from the Christchurch office, but I had videoed the car before and after. The girl said the computer system was always failing so not to worry, she checked the car and was happy with it. We picked up our tickets and with still half an hour to spare we bought a sandwich and a drink and went across the road to wait for the train to arrive.

The train was very comfortable which was good because our journey back to Christchurch was about 4 hrs. We had 4 seats and a table to sit at in Carriage C and on the other side of the aisle were 4 Chinese people who immediately started wet wiping everything in sight – the table, chairs, menu etc. Then they took several minutes getting all their food and drink out and finally they sanitized themselves and put on face masks. Some way into the journey they had taken the face masks off to eat, I had a coughing fit and their faces were a picture, they glared at me and immediately put their masks on again and chatted in Chinese! This was the start of everyone realising the Corona Virus was serious. The beginning of the journey was very pleasant, the changing view from farm land to spectacular gorges and rivers. We stopped on the way at Arthurs Pass where we took on several more people, a group of about 20 Americans came into our carriage and from then on we could hardly hear ourselves think- they were very loud. We concentrated on the views and looked forward to getting back to Christchurch and then hopefully Brisbane. In fact by now, there was lots of stuff on the tv and internet about the virus and we were starting to worry if we would be allowed to travel out of the country, concerned where we would stay if they closed the airports ?

We finally reached Christchurch at 6.30pm, we quickly disembarked and grabbed a taxi before the queue was too long. The Hotel was only 10 minutes away and we arrived just before a group on a coach arrived to book in. We asked about the shuttle bus for the airport for tomorrow as it was only 12$ each instead of about 70$ in a taxi and we were told that there would be lots more security to go through at the airport and we would have to be checked in 4 hrs before our flight. Wow, our flight was 3pm so they said we would have to take the 10am shuttle to be at the airport for 10.45am??? We were so annoyed as we had planned to have the morning in Christchurch and take some photos of the Cathedral and the earthquake damage and maybe visit the museum. Oh well, we dropped the bags in our “tiny” room again and went straight out to the Indian restaurant for dinner. We took a walk around the town before it got dark to walk off the meal and managed to get a couple of photos of the Cathedral which they are only just starting to renovate.

Saturday morning we are checked out and waiting for the shuttle bus. When it arrives, we are first on and for the next 30 minutes we get a tour of the city as the driver weaves his way around the city collecting passengers. Finally, with 12 occupants we set off for the airport. There is much chatter in the back from Americans, New Zealanders, Dutch and Australians but I am glad I am at the front and don’t need to speak because I don’t want to cough. We arrive at the airport and it is almost deserted, I ask the security man, “where is everyone ?” He asked when my flight was and I told him it was 3pm and the Hotel had advised us that we had to be here checked in 4 hrs before our flight? “No, 2 hrs” he said!! There were no extra security checks and in a few minutes we are through to the departure lounge which was empty too, so we settled into 2 nice easy chairs, got some breakfast and a drink and delved into our books. Every time I needed to cough, I went to the toilet and waited til it was empty, I was dreading the flight. The departure lounge began to fill up an hour before our flight and we boarded easily, the flight was smooth and uneventful and I managed to keep my coughs to a few small ones into my scarf!

On our way back to Brisbane

We landed in Brisbane at 4.45pm but what normally takes 20 mins took us over an hour to get out of the airport. Firstly the luggage took for ever to arrive then we went through so many checks, temperature, baggage, questions, forms… finally we were through and outside – you can’t imagine the relief to actually be back safe.

We were so lucky, that evening it was all over the news that airports were starting to close their doors and anyone arriving from tomorrow would have to go into isolation for 14 days . We did self isolate anyway because of my cough but I had no temperature or any other symptoms and a few days later after a rest I was fine.

We enjoyed New Zealand South Island and without the problems of the Virus and my cough it could have been great but I don’t think it will be on my list to revisit now.

January and February 2020

With everyone gone, the house is so quiet after having 11 of us here for 16 days over Christmas and New Year, however, with hardly a moment to take a breath, Tj has booked tickets to see JoJo Siwa ?? never heard of her but apparently the girls love her and Adam doesn’t want to go so I was asked and happily went. Well the girls loved the singing and dancing but did get tired mid way through but what a precocious young lady she is, can’t say I would rush to see her again and the price of the bows, jackets and t-shirts was extortionate, $175 for a thin jacket ! no way.

All ready for the concert

The next day is the annual meeting of TJs mothers group who still meet every year, this being their 6th birthday. Great turn out again, this time at Plantation swim pool with everyone bringing something to eat there was a real feast laid out on the table.

MOTHERS GROUP 2020

Shortly after leaving Mia suddenly announced “my tooth, its come out”. She stood there with blood pouring out of her mouth and Zoe took one look and began to heave and vomited over the floor! we laughed so much, poor Zoe can’t abide anything bloody, sicky, gruesome – she just doesn’t have the stomach for it – bless.

Oh no 2nd tooth has come out !
Taking the bird to the vets

During the late afternoon a silly bird flew into Adam and Tjs bedroom window and stunned itself, it hid in the long grass at the side of the house and when we checked it it didn’t fly, We left it til after dinner and it was still there so we gathered it up and took it to the local vets where they said they thought it had probably broken its wing – poor thing.

With Zoe back at daycare but Mia at home til 28th January when school year starts, Bob and I took her to the shopping centre where she could meet the snow queen and get a gift and a photograph and do some crafts. There were a lot of people there in the queue but Mia enjoyed meeting her.

Happy to meet the Snow Queen and collect her goodies

We had planned to get haircuts before Christmas but just didn’t get round to it, then it was too late as we use the Teaching Academy of Hairdressers for Queensland and they closed a week before christmas. You get a really good haircut by a trainee hairdresser supervised by a lovely lady and its at least half the normal price. Now mine and Bobs hair is so long (nearly 3 months since it was last cut) I can’t remember when it was this long so we booked appointments and both got haircuts, how good was that – I felt like I had lost a few kilos lol. Second job for the day was to book our holiday to New Zealand. We have been researching and looking for the right itinerary and have finally decided so we went ahead and booked it – done .

Its the weekend and Tj is treating us to Elton John tickets for his last tour. Its been raining all day and some people were saying they weren’t going to go as it was an outside venue, in fact people were selling some online. Being scouters and Gallards we went out and bought the last pairs of wellington boots (gum boots here) and donned waterproof coats and took plastic sheeting to hold over us. The weather was so bad we thought it would be chaos parking in a field so we took an Uber which was very easy and soon we were settled in our camp chairs with a good view of the stage. Well what a performance, he was brilliant, the rain stopped as he stepped onto the stage and two and a half hours later as he was finishing we had a light shower – so glad we went. Those people who have missed his tour because of this virus, have a treat in store when it gets re-planned.

The next morning Bob and I started to re-upholster the dining chairs. They bought them some time ago and the seats have sagged – you know what its like with a saggy bottom – not comfy! So we sourced some new ply board, foam and wadding (actually got a bargain for the first 2 sets of foam as he undercharged us ) and started to make them look like new again. It took us about 3 weeks, doing 1 at a time and I must say I am very pleased with the results, I have always fancied doing a bit of re-upholstery and we enjoyed the satisfaction of our efforts.

While we were doing this, Adam and Tj were buying and putting up new wall cupboards in their office and Tj asked if I would like some in the craft area ? – yes please – as you can see they look great and all my craft, sewing and painting boxes are labelled and tidy.

My craft corner wall cupboards all organised

Zoe has gone up to Koalas which is like Kindergarten, being the last year before they start school. She is so excited to be upstairs with the big girls and boys.

Mia’s 6th Birthday is 25th January and as she has already had her party with Zoe at new year she asked if we could go swimming. We had planned to take her up the coast to a lagoon but the weather is still very wet and unpredictable with heavy showers on and off so we took her to the local pool and to compensate we let her choose where she wanted dinner! I think grandad had whispered in her ear because she chose Hogs Breath Cafe which is also grandad’s favourite restaurant.

The day has come, its been so long since Adam and Tj moved here, (2009 in fact), it took them many years to get permanent residency and finally some nearly 3 years to get citizenship.

Yeh – Australians at last

Today is their ceremony in which they become legal Australians with Australian passports. Bob and I are so thrilled to be here with them, it brings a lump to my throat to think that they have struggled with the legal system for so long to finally be here. Their friends the KP’s (shortened because their name is unpronounceable) came along to support them along with Adams boss, Lea, who has been instrumental in getting them to this point. The ceremony was very moving and we were so glad that we had learnt the first verse of their national anthem so we could sing along. Afterward, with certificates in hand we went off to celebrate with lunch out and in the afternoon the KP’s put on a lovely BBQ with a few other friends to celebrate the Gallards change of status.

Adam’s boss Lea came to support them too

Monday is a bank holiday because Australia day was on Sunday so Adam and Bob were tasked with taking out the security grills on the front bay window. The house is very secure with alarms and cameras and the grills were very dated. I must say the difference is amazing.

To keep the girls busy, while this was going on, I had promised them that when grandad had finished painting the cubby house to Mummy’s approval -(grey and white) that we would jazz up the inside ! So – girls stripped naked, cups of red, green, blue, purple, yellow, orange and pink paint at hand, I gave them both a brush and a pot of paint and said splash it all over the walls – well it was so much fun, the neighbours came out to see what all the screams of delight and laughter was all about. As you can imagine, before we had finished, Zoe has painted Mia’s face and Mia had “accidentally” brushed paint across Zoe’s bottom, chest, legs etc. However, I must say the look is perfect, even if mummy prefers plain white – we don’t lol.

and a splash of colour

kids on bikes and scooters

Just before all the kids go back to school Tj met up with some of her friends with their children at a local park and they all took bikes or scooters and after some time on the swings and slides and an elevenses’ food break they set off on a path around the park on their bikes and scooters – only 1 injury as little Lucy came off her bike going round a corner and grazed her knee.

January 28th 2020 – Mia starts year 1 at school. the first year in prep flew by but she is looking forward to meeting her new classmates and her 2 teachers Mrs. Tebble and Mrs Toop. It was a family affair to drop her off and introduce ourselves to the teachers but as we were leaving there were tears from Mia. A few kind words and a cuddle and the teacher distracted her so we could slip away. When we picked her up at 3pm she was full of the activities of the day and very happy.

Big girl, 6 years old and setting off to Year 1 at school
Its a tough life haha

Bob still plays golf regularly, every Tuesday more or less with a small group of friends he has met at a local course. I however, haven’t played for weeks so Bob suggested that with everyone back to work, school and daycare that we could go off for a round on our own on Thursday. We had a great day, the sun shone and I think I won, it was nice to be out and having a game.

Another month gone and we are in February, its still very hot so saturday morning we all went off to the swimming pool, not the local one but one that has slides and other things to enjoy for the girls. Mia tested her balance (needs some practice) but her swimming is coming along in leaps and bounds.

Zoe is settling into daycare well and the staff already love her, however, one day she was not as happy as her usual self and when the educator asked what would make her happy, she said could she make some biscuits ? Ok said Miss Esther I will talk to mummy and the chef and see what we can do. Zoe and I found a recipe for some chocolate chip biscuits and printed it out for the chef and she took it to daycare. Then a few days later Zoe was in her element helping the chef make biscuit for all the children. Everyone got a turn to stir the mixture, which Miss Esther said was crazy, but Zoe was allowed in the kitchen to assist the chef. The beam on her face was so lovely as she presented us all with a biscuit each that she had saved for us.

pancake breakfast yummy

On another day, Daycare also had a pancake breakfast for the children and their mums’ dads and nannies too ! The staff had made the pancakes and we joined the children to eat them with syrup, honey, jam or butter on them. Must say they were very good so we had a few each.

The next weekend Tj had booked the girls into a Taekwondo trial lesson. They were a bit shy to start but soon got into the oo and ah and punching and kicking, smiling as they looked across to us watching on the sidelines. However, when asked if they liked it and wanted to come again Mia said no and Zoe yes. To date they haven’t signed up, Tj talked with them and decided to wait a while and try again later in the year, before she spends money on outfits and lessons. So glad they decided to wait as it would have been another activity that they can’t do at the moment due to restrictions.

During the next week, weather was wet again so golf was cancelled as the lakes had flooded the footpaths. Bob was depressed so I kept him busy around the house and garden, jetwashing the decks snd cleaning the cars when the rain stopped.

At the weekend Adam and Tjs friends Ellie and Johnno who used to live in Brisbane, flew up from Adelaide and paid us a visit with their daughter Hayden who is 3. They came for breakfast and we went to the beach for the day and had a bbq dinner here. It was lovely to see them as I hadn’t seen them for about 4 years and hadn’t met their daughter at all.

Mia, Zoe and Hayden happy playing together
seaside playtime

They were going to the Gold Coast for a holiday but coming back in a few days to stay overnight with us before they flew back to Adelaide, I think they miss Brisbane and the life here as Adelaide is very much more sedate .

After a quiet week where the only notable thing was Adam replacing the old lawn mower (think Bob has worn it out ) with a nearly new one and me making a Princess Castle decal for Mia’s bedroom all of a sudden the weekend diary was full.

Mia’s Castle and Zoe’s bedroom wall in progress

Thursday Bob took me to Wolston Golf Course where we had an audience as we tee’d off the first hole.

Friday we had a sewing day at TJs friend Sam’s mum’s house. Sam and her Mum are good sewers so we helped TJ and Rosemaree with their projects which was very productive, with TJ making 3 cases for her and the girls’ glasses and I made 1 case. Rosemaree made 2 wrap around cosy sheets for her girls to help them sleep. We were hoping to repeat the activity but we don’t know when we will be able to now.

The Sewing Ladies busy making sunglass puches and bed cosy sheets

Saturday was meet Bluey and friends (this is a childrens tv show which was made in Brisbane and its gone viral). We queued up at the shopping centre and watched as parents pushed their precious children in front of the camera for a photo with Bluey and Bingo. When it came to our turn we all piled in for the photo – I am not standing for 20 mins to not get my photo done! Funnily we were chatting afterwards and watched as almost all the parents after us were going into the photo – haha. Rosemaree asked the girls if they wanted to come over for a sleepover tonight – oo yes please they said, so that left us with a free afternoon and evening. Doesn’t happen often but Adam, TJ and Bob and I went out to Top Golf, a driving range where you score points for getting the ball in a target – great fun for anyone who can swing a club. Of course I won, but we had a great laugh and some dinner while we played. Finishing off the evening at the drive in cinema at Yatala where we watched Bad Boys – great film, maybe a little too much language but we enjoyed it.

Sunday we collected the girls early and at lunchtime we left them with Adam and Bob while Tj, Sam, Rosemaree and I went to a Beeswax wrap making course. Lots of fun and chatter and a glass of wine thrown in, only us and one other couple there so we chatted to the tutor who gave us lots of information so that we can now make them at home too. We made about 20 wraps each which was very good value for the cost of the course. So guess what Brit, Alice, Sue, Ally you are getting for Christmas lol.

Wednesday 26th Feb Adi’s parents Frank and Mary arrive in Brisbane mid afternoon on their 6 week round the world holiday. We collected them from the airport and once they had unpacked and had a cup of tea, we took them up to Mount Coot-tha which is to the west of the city with fantastic views over it and the surrounding area right out to sea. We had a coffee or a beer and then took them to Kangaroo point right in the city to see the skyline view up close.

The Smiths Seniors have arrived
On the ferry to the city

The next day we went to Bulimba a lovely little village on the edge of the river where we boarded a catamaran ferry into the city. Its about 25 mins ride and such a leisurely way to travel and to show off the Storey Bridge and other sites along the river. We got off at Riverside where Tj works and she met us to show them the view from level 32 of her office building – its amazing up there as you can see for miles. followed by lunch in the cafe below her office then on to Southbank, Brisbane’s man made city beach. The clouds were gathering but it was still warm so we changed into our swimwear and had a dip in the water. However, the clouds turned black and the thunder and lightening started so the tannoy announced that everyone had to leave the water, we just about got out and dressed when the heavens opened so we ran into the nearest bar for a hot drink while the storm passed. When we got off the ferry back in Bulimba, it had to be done – Nom Noms icecream !

Fridays Tj doesn’t work and Zoe is home so Mary came with us to take Mia to school and see where her classroom is and then to watch Zoe at her Superstars dance class where she met Sam and Rosemaree too. As soon as the class was over Bob and Frank picked us up and we drove to TopGolf on the Gold Coast. Frank loves golf too but Mary isn’t into it at all but we had a lot of fun again trying to beat each others score, I think Frank won in the end.

Me trying hard
Mary giving it her all

Finishing there we moved to the beach on the Gold Coast where this was the last day of the annual sand sculpture competition – wow you will see the pictures, they were fabulous.

Time to move on for lunch at the yacht club and then spend the rest of the afternoon in the pool at Sam’s apartment complex – ah relax – it was almost empty too.

Heaven, peace and quiet

When we finally got home we had time for a quick snack and Tj and Mary and I went to meet some friends for a drink and a chat at the local hotel bar – such a lovely day.

Excited or what Saturday morning and we are up very early, packed and out the house for 8am to catch the Tangalooma ferry for the weekend. Tj had found a good deal for us all to stay in a villa on the resort island with free ferry passage.

Everyone ready to go

The ferry sailed into dock around mid day and we were soon installed in the beach house. A bit of lunch, playtime with the girls on the beach and a BBQ dinner before going back to the beach to feed the wild dolphins who come in every night for fish! We had to line up, take a fish from the bucket and hold it out for them to take, (our dolphin was called Silhouette) photos were taken of course but our free ones on the phone were just as good. A great feeling being in the sea with them but the mosquitoes were in force and had a good meal out of us ! The musical entertainment in the bar was awful so we had ice creams all round and sauntered back to the villa.

Sunday morning, a cooked breakfast and the girls wanted to go to the swimming pool. We spent a couple of hours playing with them and getting them to swim underwater too. After lunch, the girls had a nap so Adam, Frank and Mary came with Bob and I for a walk along the beach, about 30 mins brought us to the shipwrecks where you can dive or snorkel. Adam had snorkels for 3 of us so Bob and I went out with him first and saw the most amazing fishes swimming around the wrecks. As we passed over the ships to the other side, the sea floor dropped a long way down, quite scary for me, it made my tummy turn over but I loved it. When we returned to the beach, Frank and Mary went out with Adam but the wind had gotten up and the current was stronger so they couldn’t make it out the 100 metres or so to the wrecks – shame that they didn’t see them but they could see some of the fishes nearer the beach.

Monday morning and our bags were collected at 7am and we were on the ferry home at 8.30am.

The girls were dropped off at school and daycare and then we took Frank and Mary to Cleveland for lunch in the marina at Raby Quay. Bob was planning to take them to Hogs Breath but it was closed for renovation so we picked another restaurant along the marina where we had a super lunch in a very pleasant setting.

To finish off the day we drove back up the coast, stopping at Victoria Point, Wellington Point and Wynnum to show them the different coastlines. We weren’t late going to bed tonight, it had been a very long and busy day.

Tuesday is their last day here so Bob took Frank to play golf at Wolston Golf with the kangaroos and Mary and I walked about a mile to the local shopping mall. Unfortunately we hadn’t been there long, in fact we had just got our morning coffees when Adam called to say that he had had a message to say there was smoke in the house! We quickly walked back to the house to check it out and no sign of smoke thank goodness, we don’t know what that was, a technical blip ! We decided to walk back to the shopping mall and get Bob and Frank to pick us up when they had finished golf – good plan – they bought us lunch and drove us home but I easily did my 10,000 steps today. We had planned to take Frank and Mary out in the evening for a drink but I think we were all tired so they happily relaxed and watched some tv. Tomorrow they were getting on a plane to Sydney for another few days sightseeing and we are packing for New Zealand !

Christmas and New Year 2019/20

Hi everyone, when I started this page I said “Happy New Year” everyone, its been a long time since I wrote but life is so busy and I am having so much fun I haven’t gotten around to writing. However, much has changed and the world has gone crazy so I hope you enjoy reading my adventures.

So December 16th Tj’s sister arrived for a 3 week holiday and we were out and about visiting places with her.  First trip was to the Maze near Bribie Island, I was thinking it might be only for little ones but to our surprise it was aMAZing lol.  Set in beautiful gardens with a magic waterfall as you enter, (girls didn’t see the magic eye that stopped the flow as you approached) we spent longer than we thought we would chasing the girls round the maze and trying out the different activities.

Lost in the maze

collecting the clues

Finally they were tired so we stopped for a coffee break (or ice cream) and then set off for the Sandstone Hotel for lunch.  We love this hotel, set on the edge of the water opposite Bribie Island with open deck areas, a little animal petting farm and children’s play area – everything for a relaxing lunch.

View from the deck at Sandstone Hotel

Tummies all full,  we drove the 10 mins to the beach and set up for the rest of the day. Everyone had a wonderful time in the sea, building sandcastles and making memories with the girls.  So tired, they slept most of the way home.  Continue reading Christmas and New Year 2019/20

Australia 2019/2020

November 2019
Hi all, Well we are here again, how many times? 6, 7 ? I have lost count but this is like coming home again except – the home has grown !! Adam and TJs extention is ENORMOUS and fabulous although they have saved Bob and I a few little jobs to keep us busy while we are here for 6 months, it is all but finished. Its funny how you very quickly get used to the extra space, the office and attached “mancave” for Adams playstation is well used. (I am actually sitting at his computer writing this blog while he is away for a few days working in Perth.)

The Christmas lights up at the Gallard Mansion

Well its been busy as usual, the first week we were washed out by colds and viruses and it was only after 2+ weeks that we felt back to normal but we have still been out and about. Every week we have taken up the school and daycare runs and to give Adam and TJ a break we have also done some of the dance class and swim class ferrying too. It has been interesting to see the changes in the girls, Mia, more grown up and able to do so much herself, and Zoe – well a “little” girl who has changed beyond belief, she was only 2 when we left and now she is almost 4 and a completely crazy funny kid who has us in hysterics regularly with her Ozzie voice, actions and comments. She loves to sing, in the bathroom, on the toilet, in the car – well everywhere actually and she adores to dance to any music available. This last week we went to see them both perform at Superstars Concert and they were very proud to be with the 750 or so other children performing their dances, – it must be very daunting for an almost 4 year old and an almost 6 year old  to stand on a stage infront of a whole theatre full of people but they did well! The previous day Mia also performed in her Speech and Drama concert.

Lots of little jobs for us to do, I have recovered the seat in the hall and the cushion for the outside bench, repaired clothes and lots of little jobs, like making toothfairy bags with the girls names on them and on their drinking cups and finishing off some embroidery things for christmas and birthday presents – oh Mia has a wobbly tooth and she is very excited to loose it – watch this space. Bob is on painting duty and has almost finished the fourth coat on the Cubby House for the girls and he and Adam are building a wall around the posh new BBQ /Outside kitchen we have on the deck.

Well what else have we been up to? Trips to parks, a ride on an electric mini train, swimming, shopping and much more.  We had a great visit to the enchanted garden in the city which the council sets up every year at christmastime – beautiful displays and fairy places all done in lights, the girls love this place. We took a picnic and ate in the parkland before we went in. Another evening we travelled into the city by train to watching the Christmas lights turned on in the city, a treat for the girls, we then went out for dinner in an Italian Restaurant with them.

Great time at picnic and Enchanted Garden

Bob is back to playing golf every Tuesday, giving me time to myself to catch up on tv programmes, write the blog and sew or craft but I did play last week for the first time in over 2 months and beat Bob hands down. Will play again perhaps next week, although TJs sister arrives next Monday for christmas so we will be busy out and about with her too.

Before the end of November we put the outside lights up and the christmas tree although it took 2 weeks to find enough time to decorate it with the girls as evenings aren’t long enough and weekends are booked! We have an Elf on the shelf in our house this year and the girls have named her Lily, she is a good Elf so far, except the night she put chocolate all over the toilet paper and as Zoe announced the next morning  ” Lily has RUINED our bathroom Mummy”!!  This week she has been sewing on Nannies machine and made herself a new skirt and a dress and she also appeared one day with a Scout Neckker on as she is a Scout like Mia.

We have nearly caught up now, this week saw the Dads have a night out, (thats the dads of Mias class friends at school) and a good time they had, returning home late looking a bit glassy eyed ! I did hear that 2 of the dads continued after everyone left and one only arrived home at 8am the next morning??  No questions!  The Mums (and me) had a much more sedate lunch the following day, down on the rivers edge at Mr Percivals a very classy bar that has recently been renovated, along with a whole wharf of restaurants.  We had a playdate at one of Mias friends houses, the parents provided a lovely bbq meal and everyone was welcome to use the pool, however, the children and the dads went in, leaving the ladies to chat. Yesterday I felt like baking so I made a very large Frittata and some, I mean 64,  little lasagne cups for the girls birthday party on 31st december and a garlic dip, all frozen ready.  It was very hot in the kitchen and the outside temperature was very high too so we decided to go to the local pool for a swim and I am pleased that I managed to get 60 lengths in.  Mia is learning the Eukelele so after school Bob and I went to her concert  for a 5 minute rendition of Jingle bells and something else?

Wednesdays are Scouts, with Adam in Perth, Grandad took and came back with 2 more badges, she loves the group and Adam who helps out when he can (especially cooking at the sausage sizzle)  is toying with joining as a leader too, perhaps when Zoe starts. Last night there was a terrific thunderstorm that started around 10pm and went on for sometime, lightnening flashing constantly and the rain lashing so we were all a bit bleary eyed this morning.  Well Adam is home, flew back from Perth overnight so off the computer and onto my machines, name tags to make….

Sending best wishes, love and happiness to everyone this Christmas and hoping that 2020 is a spectacular year for everyone. xx
